Obituary of Floyd J. Townsend

there will be no viewing Floyd J. Townsend Floyd J. Townsend entered Heaven on August 30, 2009. He was born June 15, 1914 in Warroad, Minnesota to Lee and Laurie Townsend. After moving to Tacoma, WA, he attended Lincoln High School and later attended St. Martin’s College in Olympia. Floyd worked at the Ft. Lewis PX for 8 years and became the supervisor of several army exchanges. He married his dear wife, Doris E. Newman, on August 17, 1942, and spent their honeymoon at the Alderbrook Resort on Hood Canal in Union. He joined the Army Air Corp on October 30, 1942, and became an aerial photographer, recording the aftermath of WWII, traveling to Europe, the South Pacific and China. He was honorably discharged on December 15, 1944. After discharge from the military, Floyd worked as an advertising salesman for The Olympian until his retirement in 1978 as an advertising sales manager. He was very proud when his son Lee followed in his footsteps and started publishing the Community Values Magazine. Floyd often told him that had he been younger, he would have loved to have worked with his son. His dad was his mentor. Floyd and Doris became “snowbirds” after his retirement and loved spending most of the winter in their travel trailer in Arizona, while having their home off Boston Harbor Road overlooking the bay in Olympia. Floyd enjoyed snow skiing, snooker, golfing, and traveling. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an exemplary example of hard work, giving and patience. When Floyd could no longer drive, he and Doris moved in with their daughter Toni and her husband Mick’s on their horse ranch in Shelton. They enjoyed family get-togethers often. They also made many new friends in Shelton at the senior center and 40-8 club. He was also a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church, the Elk’s Club, VFW, Capitol City Golf Club, and was a Capitalarian. He and his wife raised their 3 children, Toni, Trish and Lee on their property on Hicks Lake in Lacey. He built a 2-bedroom log cabin practically single-handedly. When the family outgrew the cabin, he oversaw the building of their final family home on the lake. Many happy times were spent there with friends and family. They also looked forward to their summer vacations RVing down the Oregon Coast. Floyd will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his loving and devoted wife of 67 years. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim Townsend; and granddaughter, Melissa Smith (Determan). He is survived by his wife Doris of 67 years, his daughters, Toni Determan (Mick), Trish Bradley (Jim Scott); and son, Lee Townsend (Babs); grandchildren Paula, Meg and Diamond; great-grandchildren Michael, Morgan, Nikko, Ryan and Julia. His funeral will be held this Saturday, September 5, 2009, 11:00 am, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 601 West “C” Street, Shelton, WA.
