Elizabeth Matson

Obituary of Elizabeth Matson

Elizabeth “Betty” Matson, 95, passed peacefully in early morning on January 21, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband, John (1987); her parents, Henry and Angie Froehlich; brothers, Paul and Richard; sister, Virginia Kovack; daughter-in-law, Elaine Anderson; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is survived by daughter, Shirley Phillips and husband John of Arizona; daughter, Bonnie Shatner of Olympia, Washington; son, Jack Matson and wife Penny of Allyn, Washington; extended son, Alfie Anderson and wife Pat of Springfield, Illinois. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter; numerous extended grandchildren and other family. Betty was born March 27, 1921, in Metaline, Washington. Most of her childhood was spent at the family home in Key Center, growing up and playing with many cousins and friends who stayed in contact. She loved them all dearly. Moving to Belfair and making their home on South Shore in 1942, Betty and John were very involved in the development of their community. Betty’s life was one of serving the Lord, and she helped in the formation of Belfair Community Baptist Church, and served as a Deaconess for many years. She was involved with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts in her early years. She also was one of the founders of the Women’s Fire Auxiliary of Belfair, along with John, who was a charter member of Belfair Fire Department. Betty loved to travel, including to the Holy Lands twice and to Germany, and taking ocean trips and a cruise to Alaska with sister-in-law, Ethel. She had a passion for hummingbirds, and loved apple picking in Eastern Washington, watching the sea life through her waterfront window, gardening, and sending birthday cards. She was a member of the Evergreen Garden Club and her name was drawn out of a hat in naming Twin Firs Cemetery in Belfair; she was truly honored. Betty also loved giving as much as she could to family, friends, and strangers because she loved life and knew that the joy of living was giving! And she lived it! She gave to the Veterans continually since she loved our veterans with all her heart, and for many years helped make up “I-Care” packages to them for all they do. In many ways, Betty was like a good smoor: sometimes rough but loving on the outside but all so sweet on the inside. She is deeply loved and will always be remembered. Memorial donations may be made to Belfair Community Baptist Church, Belfair Faith in Action, or Belfair Fire Dept.
