Obituary of Jim Pill

Jim Pill Jim Pill passed away suddenly at St. Peter's Hospital on January 5, 2007. He was born on February 18, 1925 in Hoquiam, Washington. He attended Hoquiam High School, joined the United States Navy at the age of 17, and served in World War II. After serving in the Navy, he then attended both Western Washington University and the University of Washington, from where he graduated with a Master's degree in Education. Jim met his best friend, Edith, in college, and married her on September 15, 1951 in Port Angeles, Washington. A lifelong educator in the Tumwater School District, he served as teacher and Vice-Principal at Michael T. Simmons Elementary School and as Principal at Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School and Tumwater High School, before becoming the Superintendent of the Tumwater School District, a position he held from 1968 to 1982. Jim was known to many of his friends as "Dr. Kimo", and retired in July of 1982 to enjoy life as an avid fisherman and log cutter. He enjoyed traveling to Alaska and fishing with his friends. He always had a soft spot for all animals, offering homes to wayward cats and bunnies. Jim was a member of the Elks Club, the Y.M.C.A., and the Humane Society. He also served on numerous committees for a variety of causes. In addition to his wife, Edith, he is survived by his brother, John, sister-in-law, Doreen, nieces, Nancy (Doug) and Kathy (Greg), children, John and Julia, and favorite cat companion, "Yukon". A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2007, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 114 20th Avenue S.E., Olympia, Washington.
