My wife, Margaret, and I have known Jerry and his family for the past twenty years. When they moved back to Olympia in the mid-1980’s, Jerry’s son, Scott, and our son became the best of friends. That was how we initially became acquainted. Margaret and I have many fond memories of times spent together.
Guests were always welcome in their home. There was no such thing as a short visit with Jerry. I can’t tell you how many times I went over to his house planning on staying for an hour but usually ended up being talked into staying for dinner and conversation that lasted well into the night. He always made sure his guests were well taken care of. Jerry & Susan were always the ultimate hosts.
We will forever remember Jerry, his favorite chair at the breakfast nook, his big smile and his firm handshake every time we got together. As so many others have pointed out, Jerry was such a talented joke and story teller that you never knew what the punch line was going to be or when it would come. Jerry, being the gentleman that he was, even embarrassed himself sometimes with the punch line if the joke was a bit off-colored.
Friendships were important to Jerry. Someone once told me that if you have a handful of great friends, you have led a blessed life. We certainly would count Jerry amongst our group of great friends. He simply was taken from us at far too young an age. Jerry will live on in our hearts and minds.
We always respected Jerry for his convictions of what was right and wrong. Many times, he and I sat at the breakfast nook in his home and solved the problems of the world. Or according to what we thought was the ideal solution.
Here's a poem I found that reminds us of Jerry:
His boundless love of family and friends
Comes back to me
As if he is in that chair
Once again.
There is an ache,
Realizing the chair is empty.
But also, a joy in knowing
That all that knew Jerry
Will forever remember him
Even if his chair appears so empty.

I never got to meet Jerry and I've only known his family a very short time...but from all of the stories I've been lucky enough to hear about him I know he was a great man. There seem to be fewer and fewer people that know what being a man is about, he was the true definition. Someone who worked very hard and always put family first, and from what I can tell he instilled those same morals in those close to him.
Family is the first and last true solace in the world and he built a great one. Even though I never met him I can tell you...that is the single greatest thing a man could ever do, he will be missed.

Dear Susan - It seems both long ago and just a few years ago that you and Jerry met. He seemed a great guy. You radiated happiness after your wedding. Although Jerry's loss will be felt, he lives through you and your chidren. My sympathy is with you, and a hope that the good memories will soon replace the sadness.

Jerry: the first time I met you, I was standing on the step up, to a plate burner. You walked in, we were looking eye to eye and I said, how the F_ _ _, tall are you? These were the first words I said to you and we had a great friendship ever since that time. John
Jerry: I will forever miss your statement, You are looking younger and better every time I see you. We both knew you were just blowing hot air, I loved it. Diana

I saw my classmate Jerry at a high school reunion picnic last summer, the first time since we worked together at The Daily Olympian in the early 70s. We had an very enjoyable visit, talking about the stops we'd made around the country on the road of life. He was taken much too soon from his family and friends.

To many people, Dad was known as a businessman...in the purest sense. He was the epitome of what a man should be. He was a provider for his family, a shining example of how hard work and determination does pay off. He taught me how to do the right thing even when it doesn't always feel that way...and that things will always work out, one way or another. He had several catch phrases that I will pass on to Kian. "This will either be a very, very good day...or a very, very bad day...and that is up to YOU!" That was how he chose to live his life...to improve upon the things you have control over.
You know, I used to get so upset as a teenager when my mother would say, " You're just like your father!!!" because we were...just like two peas in a pod. Now, over the years I came to realize there was no bigger compliment. I am so lucky to have picked up his work ethic and personality. My dad had a light/energy about him that was magnetic. He was captivating when telling a story or joke. He ALWAYS had a funny joke to tell!
The love that we have for our dad will never pass...neither will the many memories we will cherish that brought us to where we are today. Thank you, Dad, for making me who I am today! We will miss you every moment, but I know you will be there in spirit.

Lane and I are so saddened to hear of Jerry's passing.

We are so glad our paths crossed each other on this short time, we all have on this earth.
I know he is out of pain and at peace with our wonderful heaven above.
Now we can all cherish the memories and laugh at all his jokes, even though they were not all that funny!!!
He never understood why I could'nt get them!!
He would just give me that look of his...
He will be greatly missed by us and many who knew him.
Please know we are thinking of all of you, and hope that you have strenghth to get through this loss.

I have known Jerry since he was 6 years old, and that's a mighty long time. We spent our childhood and teen years "almost" getting into trouble at every opportunity.
I could always count on him, as he was what a true friend should be. He was always generous in thought and deeds. We respected his opinion and could rely on his counsel (however, he once said "that Melanie doesn't listen to anybody")
His sense of humor will be what we will miss the most.
side note: He loved his dogs, but didn't care much for BATS!
