Dave: I just saw Karen last night and she told me of your passing. Needless to say I was very shocked and saddened. We talked for quite some time and I was happy to hear that you found the family you always dreamed of and were able to enjoy life to the fullest with them. She told me that you were a great dad to her children and a wonderful husband. I know you loved her very deeply and as you told me, Karen is "a very nice lady." You will always hold a special place in my heart. I will never forget those handsome blue eyes, your wonderful humor and the times we shared. Mom and Dad often asked about you and were very sad to hear of your passing too. We all loved you and missed you very much. I hope heaven has a lot of golf courses for you to play and that you are teaching the angels how to hit the ball. And hey, even though I'm still mad at ya - "I love ya and I like ya!"

Dear Karen and Family, Please accept my deepest condolensces to you and your famiy. David was a close friend from 7th to 10th grade at Tyee Jr. High and then Sammamamish High. We graduated together. Then when he ran for Senator from West Seattle I had the great honor and fun to be with him several times a week working on his campaisgne for several months. David will always be one of my favorite friends in my life. I cherished our friendships and honest talks. I am so glad he was happy with you, the children & the grandchildren. David is special...... great sharing of feelings, laughing all the time, a teaser, charming, loving and very personable. The last time I talked to him, it was over a year and a half ago..... I wish I had seen him....but time slips away. The very best to you, Karen, and the family. I love the photo of David, it looks just like him. He didn't change that much. Sincerely, Faith Beatty, Seattle, Washington 206-932-1556

Dave and I were friends at SHS and I'll never forget that I never beat him at "Horse." I am not surprised that he turned out to be a good golfer. He was a good man and we are all hurting because of his loss. David truly loved life and the people around him. He will be missed by us all.

Dave was a starting guard on our successful Sammamish High School basketball team. The energy and emotion he brought to all of us will always be remembered. David LOVED our team, the competition, and just being together. I will always remember his enthusiasm for living. With David, everything was possible. I know he's in a pick-up basketball game right now, diving for a loose ball.

Dear Karen and family. I knew David from Sammamish High School. He was a one-of-a kind person. He was so passionate about sports and the Durkan family. And what a dancer! I will always remember the many kindnesses he showed to my family, especially to my father. I was touched by all the loving memories that are posted here. How lucky you all were to have him in your lives. Peace be with all of your family.

Dave was always ready with a strong hug, great story, or fatherly advice. The best advice he ever gave me came after I experienced tremendous heartache pursuing parenthood with various unsuccessful medical treatments. He said "if you want to be parent, don't give up"! Well we didn't, and when we adopted our son, Papa couldn't have been happier. Recently I told him that was the best advice he ever gave me and he said "that's how I got my kids". I will miss him tons and take comfort that he is at peace.
Love, xo Sandy

Dear Karen and loved ones, my mother and I are so glad and thankful that we could come for a visit while Uncle David was in good shape, seeing his warm welcome, ready smiling helpfulness and cheerful laugh. Best was realizing that we are all in the wise, loving care of Jesus Christ.
Uncle David's life has been a miracle, showing God's power to bring him up from sadly broken childhood to victorious life, a life of loving friendships that surpassed the past. As we miss David, we can rejoice again and forever that all the tragic suffering in his last earthly years is far outweighed by the eternal comfort and joyful purpose. We look forward to seeing him again someday, not for a short visit, but forever!
Karen, you have the hardest part now, and we all commit ourselves, united with you in spirit, to uphold you in prayer and be ready to comfort you in any way we can. You know best what a struggle it is to know such sadness and acknowledge such joy at the same time. It is beyond us.

Pappy
What makes a grandfather?
A grandfather is someone who is special
To you from the moment of first sight.
A man who is so remarkable
That no words can ever express how
Dear he is to you.
A man, who when you were little, would
Run up to you with open arms and squeeze
You until you would throw your head
Back with laughter.
This is a grandfather,
David Grant.
A man with such integrity
and who finally found the Lord.
This man, who when I was 9 years old, gave
Me my first Vernors Ginger Ale and Cheetos
During a huskies game,
And got me hooked ever since.
A man who loved four children like his
Own and loved a woman so deeply that you
Could not tell where it ever ended.
This is my Grandfather,
David Grant who will always be with me…
I Love you Pappy….

Dear Karen & Family:
My sincere condolences to you and your family. Although I never met you I know you are one lucky lady to have had David Grant in your life. I knew David at Tyee Junior High School and then at Sammamish High School. We had our 40th H.S. reunion last June and it was the first I had heard of David's health challenges. I lost my first husband to cancer and I know how challenging these times are. Take strength in your family and friends and the many memories you have. God Bless

What does one say at a time like this, the mold was broken when Dave was born, one of a kind, energetic, athletic, passionate about what he loved, kind, very smart, and sure of himself, he left us with many good memories, and taught us how to endure the horrific effects of cancer....he loved and laughed well...we will miss him.

I feel so fortunate to have had Dave in my life despite the fact he insisted on wearing and dressing my children up in purple and gold. As a father he was always there to encourage and comfort. He was so proud of all his children and grandchildren even Sandy & I who graduated from Washington State University. Dave was not only our Dad, he was our friend. He connected with each of us in a special way and we enjoyed just being with him.

One of the things I loved most about Dave was the way he so openly expressed his love for his family. He told us he loved us often, and he had the most wonderful beaming smile when he looked at us (especially his grandchildren)! We will all miss having Dave around greatly, but I am so happy to know he is with God now, golfing I'm sure!!

It is hard to say goodbye to Dave. He was not only my father in law but my good friend. We shared so many good times together Husky games, vacations to Mexico and Hawaii, hiking with the dogs every Sunday, or just hanging out talking football or history. I remember the first time meeting the family I was so nervous and Dave thought it would be great for all the guys to call me different names. I was Steve, Matt, Brett ect... Dave never was good at remembering names, but he could always make me laugh. We shared so many good times I will never forget. I loved the trips to Sunriver staying up late gambling till Mom made us all go to bed. Or the late nights playing Shanghai and Sequence with Kristi and Mom. Family was so important to Dave and I know he loved us all he never let a conversasion end without the " love ya and like ya" oh yeah and dont tell the others that your my favorite. He was an amazing Papa to all his granchildren. I will never forget you Big Guy... Love always Brad

I have so many memories of Dave that it is hard to think of a good place to start. So here my Top 10 list of what I will miss most about Dave:
(10) Daily emails telling me who the Husky Football Team should recruit 5 years from now.
(9) Being called Buddy Boy.
(8) Our Political Debates.
(7) Playing golf with Dave and seeing his pride when my Brother or I would hit a good shot and then receiving his invaluable tips when we did not.
(6) Seeing Dave hold court at Husky Tailgate gatherings.
(5) Having someone else who believed that you should show up at least 4 hours before Husky Game Time.
(4) After I moved to Reno getting that Sunday morning phone call from Dave where he would give me that play by play description of what took place in the Saturday Husky game.
(3) Listening to Dave brag about his children & grandchildren to his buddies.
(2) Always being there for me and ready to give me advice.
(1) Just hanging out at the house and talking late into the evening with Dave & my Mom.
Love ya ALWAYS Big Guy!

Grandpa Dave left me in tears when he passed. Icouldn't take the news. But then I thought about everything we did together. We were either walking around the golfcourse with his favorite dog Buck, running around in my aunts backyard tripping and falling over rocks, Golfing at Tocoma (I was learning from the best), or if it was those boring Sundays sitting in the den watching the history channel together. And many more stories. Soon I was laughing histaricaly and beacuse there was never a dull moment with Grandpa. Whenever he was around you would find yourslef extremely happy (at least in my case). I am going to miss Grandpa, but I will always have the memories when I need a laugh. He is in a better place now (lets prey that he can watch the Huskies). Gonna miss you.

When I think of Dave the word passionate comes to mind. He was passionate about the game of golf, playing it will all his heart and soul. He was always trying to hit that perfect shot. He was passionate about our beloved Huskies..everything purple and gold, weekly updates to Ken about who's doing what, the chili making nights before the games and arriving to tailgate hours before it even started! He and Ken were tailgating masters! And poor loosers when their Dawgs lost. Dave was passionate about his family. His kids and grandchildren were his pride and joy, always trying to spoil them more than Grandma. He liked buying them big things. I will always think of Dave when I make mashed potatoes as he never did like the way I made them and was always making sure he was the one to mash them ..this was a joke between us.
Dave, I will miss you, we will all miss you. Happy golfing with your buddies. Love ya, Lorri
