Obituary of Wesley Newton Estes

Wes Estes Wesley Newton Estes, born February 12, 1912 in Winlock, passed away February 21, 2008. Wes grew up in Grays Harbor County, graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen and attended Washington State University. Wes was an infantryman in the Army during World War II. He was wounded in the hand in Czechoslovakia in 1945 and was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal for his service. Wes worked for Standard Oil, then owned his own Chevron service stations in Olympia and at Mud Bay. He served as a PUD Commissioner, then as Thurston County Commissioner from 1967 to 1970. He also sold real estate and worked part-time for the legislature. Wes enjoyed his family home at Sunset Beach, rose and bonsai gardening, and driving trips to the Oregon coast, Lake Quinault and Mt. Rainier. He was active in the community and was a member of the Olympia Rotary, Capitalarians, Elks and the Republican Party. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his parents, and his brother Don and sister Georgie. He is survived by his sons Steve (Kathy) and Rick, his grandsons Torry and Casey, and his great-grandson Jacob. There will be no memorial service, and a suggested memorial would be a gift to the Washington State Historical Society in the name of Wes Estes.
