Aunt Suzanne especially reminded me of my mother and her sister-Marcia- they were both early examples of "liberated" women.
Suzanne's honesty and not beung afraid to speak her mind were an inspiration to all who knew her. She was friendly and outgoing which made her extremely inquisative. The way she displayed these qualities made her a very special person indeed. My favorite memory of Aunt Suzanne is a summer in the early 1970s when I was visiting her from my home in Northern Virginia. She invited my aboard her sailboat to accompany her and her son and daughter in-law on an adventure to The San Juan Islands. Her generosity imparted in me a love of the Puget Sound and basic boating skills. One evening after a day of what Aunt Suzanne called "gunkholing" ( this term was new to me at the time) we dropped anchor and proceeded to enjoy the serenity and beauty of The San Juans. The next morning we discovered that the anchor line had fouled itself around the propellor shaft. Aunt Suzannes solution, to remedy us from this predicament, was for her to plunge into the chilly waters of Puget Sound with a knife and to go under the boat to cut the rope from the shaft. We talked her out of this and the solution ultimately involved securing a knife around a long pole and while aside the vessel in the dinghy we sawed at the rope until it was freed. That trip and the memories of my Aunt will never be forgotten.

Aunt Suzanne was such an incredible woman. I so appreciated all I learned from her as well as all the the love & support she gave me through out the years. In grade school through Junior High, she outfitted my brother, sister and I with snow skiing equipment/ski lessons and week-end trips to the Mountaineer Lodge at Snoqualmie. She gave moral support through my divorce and helped buy college books and gave me gas money many times throughout my years at Tacoma Community College until I graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelors in Nursing. She felt it was important that women have an education so they can be independent.
As a young girl I would watch her make, build or fix things in amazement. She always demonstrated that a woman, if she chooses, can be a strong independent force, choose her own destiny and master any skill that she desires. There is no obstacle to big.
In November 1997, I thought it was such a honor & privilege when in Aunt Suzanne asked me to care for her, as she could see how Huntington's disease would be making it's presence known more & more each day. I'm thankful for the Olympia Senior Services STARS Adult Day Care program, several care givers and the Evergreen Nursing And Rehabilitation Center for helping my husband and I care for Suzanne over the last 5 yrs.
I especially feel blessed that my husband, Winston, embraced Suzanne as if she had always been a member of his family along with giving her a whole lot of loving care. Suzanne seemed to enjoy his attention and company by displaying her familiar quick wit and jabs of humor at him. She is going to be greatly missed.
