Marianne, Donna and Reed Family,
So sorry for the loss of your brother, husband, father and grandfather. So many childhood memories came flooding back when Ron called to tell me of Jim’s passing. The house next door was never the same after the Reed’s moved. I will always remember the Reed family and the times shared. Just thinking of the sweet reunion Jim, Andy and Betty must of had, with Ken and Alice welcoming Jim home. He will be missed and remembered by all! Love you all, Pat

Since my retirement from the UW in 1999, my contacts in Olympia began to lessen and so I was surprised and sorry to learn recently of Jim’s passing from Tom Jons. Jim was a well respected person who contributed many useful activities to the Washington higher education sector. I had the good fortune to work several months as a temporary employee at UW’s Bothell Campus at the end of my career and I’m sure Jim had been a crucial contributor to that fine campus. I’m sure that his hard work and vision of what could be accomplished through the branch campuses have been appreciated since their beginning. Jim was a great public sector servant and his accomplishments will serve our state for many years to come.

In the early part of November, I talked to Jim several times on the phone. Since I was in Olympia for a few days, we planned to meet in person, but due to a doctors appt, he had to postpone our meeting. Where were going to meet? – Tumwater Valley Golf Course, where else. We postponed our meeting until sometime in early 2016. Very sad to hear of Jim’s passing as I was looking forward to again spending time with Jim.
I’ve known Jim for 30 years. We first met when he worked for WA General Administration. We became colleagues and close friends while at the Higher Education Coordinating Board. After leaving the HECB, Jim hired me and my close friend Denis Curry, thru MGT of America, to conduct several consulting activities. Good times were had by all. Jim was a leader in the WA higher education scene. His achievements shaped the direction of Washington’s HEd, in particular the development of the WSU and UW Branch Campuses.
I remember having many good times with Jim. But perhaps the time we really got to know each other was during a space planning conference held in Honolulu. Conference activities in the morning were followed by beach time in the afternoon, ending with great meals with friends and colleagues. Jim’s love of golf is unparalleled. I played golf with him many times on many different courses. We even attended the Boeing Classic golf tournament at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge and were hosted in the Boeing corporate tent. Yes, good times were always had by all.
Jim Reed, friend and colleague – you will be missed. Rest in Peace!

I was very sad to hear of Jim’s passing. I have so many memories of him working on a wide variety of projects when I was with MGT of America. From the effort to establish university branch campuses to identifying higher education capacity, it was always a pleasure to work with Jim. He had a quick mind and was able to separate the wheat from the chaff. He worked effectively with the Legislature and was respected by all who knew him. He was one of the few people who really understood the meaning and relevance of space utilization in higher education and worked tirelessly to apply its principles in Washington. In steering projects around the state, he made a significant difference in how higher education was provided to Washington residents. His efforts led to expansions in opportunities for students in Clark, King, Snohomish, Island, Skagit, Jefferson and Spokane counties and in the Okanagan.
As a person, Jim was vibrant and fun to be with. I enjoyed the opportunities to golf with him and Tom Jons. He was a real competitor but understood that enjoyment of the game took precedence. I will miss him.

I am very much saddened to learn about Jim’s passing. He was the best. I found him a joy to work with at the HECB and considered him a friend. I will always appreciate his insights, especially on capital planning and other policy related matters. More than that I will fondly remember his demeanor, which enabled us to keep things in perspective so as not to get rattled about things that in the end were not as important as we made them out to be.
