I’m sitting here going through old emails and deleting them out of my inbox. As I go through, i check each one, and I have stumbled on the link to Aunt Thyra’s obituary. I know this entry is two years late, but I wanted to make an entry regardless. Aunt Thyra was one special lady. One of my favorite things about her was that she never missed a birthday! We always, always received a birthday card from her in the mail and a phone call. She was so faithful to reach out to us on our special day! Because of her, I am trying to live up to that commitment: letting people know they mean a lot to me by remembering their birthdays. I always knew that I was special to Aunt Thyra, and I want the beloved people in my life know that they are special to me, and they are worth my time and attention. I am still learning how to be organized enough to pull of birthday card sending without fail, but I am trying! Thank you, Aunt Thyra, for teaching me such a lovely way to love others. Love you!!

Aunt Thyra coming to visit from California at Christmas is one of my favorite childhood memories. Going to the Portland Airport to pick here up was always so exciting and mysterious. Flying was foreign to me, so watching the plane pull up to the concourse and trying to imaging that Aunt Thyra was actually on it, then seeing her walking up the ramp from the plane to greet us always had a touch of magic to it that made Christmas all the more enjoyable.
In my young teen years, Aunt Thyra taught me to play tennis, which became and still is my favorite sport. Though I’m in my 50s now I still play, though I never did use it to “make enough for the rest of us” as she used to say.
See you later, Aunt Thyra. Love – Mark
