Thoughts and Prayers to the Family.
Ed was a Very Special Person and Uncle to all of Us. Many Great Memories of HIs Very Kind and Thoughtful ways, and also his Kind Hearted and Caring Voice. I always appreciated hearing stories of Growing Up with Dad (Ivan) and Clarence (Geo). Stories of Grandpa and Grandma DeHart.
He always remembered me at Special TImes of the Year, and even as a small Tike, it was something I always appreciated.
During WInters he helped with Gathering and Bringing Loads of Wood to the House, with Dad. He was a Very Social Person with the Business and always dealt with Folks in a Fair, and Sincere Way. In the Late 1960’s he assisted in helping some of the details in buying our family home on Wilson St.
If he was in the 1966 Ford Red/White Camper Special Work Truck or the 1963 Plymouth Valiant and was going up Fourth Street, Ed would wave and honk as he was either going to get Fuel or making a trip to Ralph’s Thriftway.
I remember stories from Ed and Dad (Ivan) of “The William Winlock Miller High Schoo”, OHS that was on Capital way and how the Logging trucks would “Rattle and Shake The Windows”. (It was torn down in 1961). Also remember stories of Ed and Dad working in the Tacoma Ship Yards, and Going to High School, meant for some “Sleeping On the Bus”, on the Way Home from the Work and HIgh School Venture.
The Stores of the 1947 Mercury Convertible bought by all three Brothers, and how they would go on Various Car Dates and have fun in the Mercury Convertible.
When he was engaged and going to be married, he stopped by the Vestibule of my Work with Delilah, and was So Very Excited, to let me know of their future marriage. It made me feel so good, that they wanted me to know as soon as possible.
After Ed and Delilah had their Ceremony, The DeHarts all gathered at a small restaurant in Lacey, we surprised them with a Cake to have the family celebrate their Newly Joined Marriage.
The One Christmas, I purchased Four Placesettings of Casual China for their First Home together. They were delighted with Surprise, That year, I received a Beautiful Wool Sweater for Christmas..
On one of the last Telephone Converstations with Ed, we discussed Olympia and the various Growth of the Town. He like Dad reminded me of their Wonderful Shopping Trips to Downtown Mottman’s Mercantile Store, Stories of the Mottman Family and how the DeHart’s always found something at Mottman’s, if Mottman’s Didn’t have it “You Probably Didn’t Need It”. I know Dad (Ivan) used to quote the actual Mileage from their house on Pleasant Glade Road to the Downtown Mercantile Store. They enjoyed quoting that to you. “Ed, had said, “It’s Just Not Like Downtown, without Mottman’s”…… I had remembered that Mottman’s Closed in 1967.
The many conversations with Ed, and the Black Lab Puppy Dog “Frosty The Dog”…. was always fun to hear the ventures of Frosty at the Homestead.
Also, I remembered as a Child the Vernon Kiln’s “Brown Plaid, Organdie” dinnerware that Mottman’s had sold for many years Downtown, always on the Kitchen table. Shining and all read for the next meal.
I feel Very Lucky to have had a Family Member like Ed, and to know he was truly “Part of the Greatest Generation”..
Thank You for taking the time to read my notes anecdotes of Ed (Uncle Ed), a Very Special Person to all of us.
We will all Miss You Much.
Love, Jaime, Mickey (Mom), and Barbara
