Jeannette and Family
I am so sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. As you recall, we had worked in the same technical program at Department of Ecology. My early years in the Department included lunch hours with Bill and the rest of a group of runners. Bill’s long stride left us in catch-up mode most of the time.
He had given me a booklet of his early poetry with his signature and a message. I cherish this gift as it combined technical and art in most creative ways. He was called a “Renaissance Man” by the Director of the agency before his retirement. He was truly that man…
He had contributed beautiful words in remembrance of another famous poet of the Puget Sound Country (Robert Sund). Bill was accomplished with his work and friendships. Knowing he is no longer with us is hard to imagine, but his memory stays with me and others who knew him.
May you find lasting memories and peace with all that he left us. I was fortunate to have known and worked with Bill.
Sincerely, Rob Plotnikoff

Thank you, Bill, for decades of small moments of meaningful exchanges and companionable silences that add up to a real friendship. I will miss you very much.

We met Bill a few months ago when we moved to the neighborhood; we immediately saw his kindness and caring. We learned the very sad news when we last visited his wonderful street-side Poetry Box. We are sending our condolences to Jeanette, Bill’s family, and all who he touched.

I was very disappointed to see this news. I was a friend of Bill's starting when we were young and growing up in Spokane. Bill and I seemed to follow each other over the years starting at Sacajawea Jr High then Lewis and Clark High School and Washington State University. We had many classes together and both graduated in Zoology at WSU.
Bill was a musician and played bass in the LC orchestra. He was also in a rock band at LC and WSU where he played the bass guitar.
We were on the track teams at LC and WSU, as well as the Cross Country team at LC. Bill was a lifetime runner and marathoner. We ran a lot of miles together and developed a friendship. We even took our Selective Service physicals together.
Bill was an intellectual as well as a regular nice guy in all of our times together. This world is a better place thanks to Bill Yake's contributions in science and poetry. It's very sad to see him go.

I used to be part of a poetry group with Bill Yake, before leaving for the Bay Area in 2004. He and I were once paired up to share stories of our lives and put together poems inspired by these stories. Bill told me a story of hitch-hiking to the Tolstoy Peace Farm as a college student. I put together a little poem based on this story, called "Bill's Inexplicable Experience" , which closes with these lines which might be my way of saying farewell to this very fine poet and kind man:
"I find a man in the twilight
on a make-shift pitching mound -
plaid shirt, old Levis, hair
in a pony tail. All around him
are rain puddles gleaming
like pieces of red-hot universe
in the setting sun.
Winding up for a throw,
he's checking imaginary runners
on first and second.
I turn slowly away, leaving
this maybe-god to his game." - Katie Cameron , Alameda California

Bill Yake was one of the wonderful people I met in an 11-day Centrum workshop with poet Pattiann Rogers. It was a pleasure to continue the association over the 28 or so years since then. His generous spirit and his love for the natural world were inspiring, as is his poetry. He left so much of himself in his legacy of beautifully crafted work that he will live on in his poetry and our memories.

My condolences to Jeannette and Matthew and his family who were much loved by Bill.
I’ll miss my big brother immensely. He was a source of thoughtful advice. He was also a brilliant photographer, and if he hadn’t been such a good poet, I think he could have been a wonderful humorous story teller.
Because he was 10 years older than me, I didn’t really get to know him until my teens. He was cool then. One Christmas he took me hunting for Christmas gifts in the headshops on the shady side of Spokane. Headshops is probably the wrong name for them, but think of crowded little shops filled with leather fringed purses and incense and such. It was a whole different world for me.
He opened my eyes to other worlds too. I learned about birdwatching, and butterfly watching and about his travels to Mongolia and to New Zealand and other interesting places, all accompanied by fantastic photography. And lastly, I will miss the connection and knowledge he provided to our family’s history especially about our Grandfather Ellsworth’s life.
Good-bye, sweet brother.
