George and I were childhood friends in Maryland beginning in the 1960s until the early 1980s, when we both moved away. We shared a deep enthusiasm for nature, so our friendship made the world a more inviting and inspiring place for me. George lived in a neighborhood just north of Baltimore with big, solidly built old houses, as were the standards of the day. The streets were lined with large Beech trees, the roots of which buckled the sidewalks, creating perfect bicycle jump ramps that seemed precipitous in a kid’s mind.
In 4th grade, George disappeared from our public school. Word eventually got around that his mother had taken her own life. As it turned out, George’s father had enrolled George in a military school to support his recovery. George’s father was a kind man for whom we all had great respect and a bit of awe. As George would say with a twist of macabre, “he’s a brain surgeon”. Years later, maybe 8th grade, George came back to public school.
After many years, we reunited in early adulthood, seeking new adventures. We went hunting on a few occasions, for which George seemed to have a natural talent. We would meet early in the morning and wander judiciously selected fields in the Maryland countryside looking for game birds. We jumped two pheasants on one occasion. Before I could lift my shotgun, George had already downed both, which he promptly prepared for a meal with his girlfriend, Margaret, and her family. Another time, we hiked an old railroad track for miles with our .22 caliber rifles, plinking inanimate objects at will. George had an antique octagon barrel rifle of which he was especially proud.
George had a natural talent for mischief. There seemed to be no place on Earth that did not belong to George. Substance use was occasionally part of the picture. Indeed, tequila – in shots with salt and lemon – at George’s recommendation on a few occasions, but substance abuse did not seem to be George’s inclination. At a time when the drinking age was 18 and the 1960s were in recent memory, substance abuse was rampant, but George did not fit the mold. George was an inspired, self-respecting person, who lived each day to the fullest.
Having passed the 60-year mark, I was contemplating a fourth wind, which made me think of George, after all of these years. I fully expected to find him prospering in the inspired life befitting a great man - from which I might draw new inspiration, but it seems the scars of childhood trauma can run deep. Substance abuse may have been the mechanism, but his unfortunate terminal trajectory could have been established many decades prior.
Let this catharsis be a memorial speech for my good friend, George Sharrett. Let the memories of our good times resonate through the forests where he spent his best days.

Oh no, I only just heard about this from a neighbor, what a loss. I've known George since the Evergreen days and our shared life in the climbing world, and we both came to love building interesting houses and projects. I haven't seen him in awhile, but always assumed I'd see his big grin again and we'd tell stories, both old and new, but that's not going to happen now. Don't miss an opportunity to tell your people how much you love them.

We're all saddened by the loss of our Uncle George and the loss of his presence in Ella and Alice's lives. We have many happy memories from visits and family reunions, and his love of the outdoors will not be forgotten. He was incredibly caring towards us and always expressed a genuine interest in what we were up to, even though we often went years between seeing each other. We've made a donation to Wild Grief in his honor and hope it can help others who may be struggling. Holding George and his loved ones in our hearts.
Love,
Emily, Grace, and Claire Cason

Why it is called Willy's Slide. Somewhere in New Hampshire 40 years ago there was an ice climb called Willy's Slide. Two or three pitches of a moderate slab as I recall, but as the young alpinists we were; we diligently put on ropes and placed our anchors and slowly worked our way to the top. We set up proper belay stations and watched each other as we learned the moves with crampons and ice axes for one of the first times. At the top I am sure we crammed our faces with cubes of salami and chocolate, because I can't really remember a time when we didn't do that. Now, if only we could find a way down? I think the book might have mentioned a trough that you sat down in somewhere over to the left. Sure enough we flew down through the woods, toboggan style sitting in trough worn deep into the snow. Laughing our fool heads off. It was late in the day by this time, but we decided we had time for one more run, so we threw the crampons back on our boots and quickly discovered the thrill of the free soloing as we covered the terrain we had so carefully labored over all morning in a matter of minutes; just so we could sit on our asses and slide down again.
This is a story about George Sharrett and me. It is about living every day to the fullest. Whether it is love, work, people, or animals, be careful, and be safe, but don't hold anything back. Put everything you have into it.

George, my old climbing brother... I was at my best when you were on the other end of the rope. I treasure every trip we ever took in the mountains and cherish the drives to and from, as much as the destinations. Our talks were always joyful, sincere, ridiculous or all of these at the same time. You were the greatest of friends when we were young and growing so fast. My heart to all who were near to you.

We are very sorry to hear of this tragic loss. George was a very gentle and compassionate person. He was an intellectual. He enjoyed discussing ideas. He had a great sense of humor, and had some very funny stories from his personal experience. George was touched by small gestures and seemed surprised by them. He was one of my favorite people. Though we did not get to see each other much, I always wanted to be able to spend more time with him and expected that to happen in the future. I am saddened that I won't be able to. It is a comfort to me that I believe that life is - at its essence - spiritual in nature, and that the unique and wonderful qualities that George embodied live on, and are eternal.
