Obituary of George Bradley Sharrett

Our dear friend, brother and father, George Bradley Sharrett, took his own life on December 3, 2019.  He leaves behind many family and friends who are heartbroken by his departure.

George was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 18, 1960 to John Oliver Sharrett and Evelyn Louise Sharrett (both deceased). He moved to Olympia in the early 80s with his friend Donn, drawn here by the mountains.  He graduated from The Evergreen State College.

George loved the outdoors and most especially the wild places. He spent much of his younger life in the mountains, summiting Mt Rainier 17 times and guiding on Denali, Aconcagua and many smaller peaks. He initiated many “climb-a-thons,” first for the Waldorf School, then the Westside Co-op Preschool, and finally for Safeplace. He had a generous spirit and was able to talk and connect with just about anyone.  He loved helping others experience the natural world and had a gift for easing the way until they, too, were hooked. George was also at home back-country skiing and rock climbing.  Later in his life, he became an avid fisherman, finding peace and beauty on the rivers of Washington and Oregon and in the Sound.

A man of many talents, George was a skilled carpenter and built the house on Swift Creek in which he lived with his family for many years. In his later life, he became a home inspector, a great fit for his knowledge and personality.

George will be remembered for his ready smile, his generosity of spirit, and ability to fix almost anything. Some will remember him for his hatred of tomatoes. He was strong, willing to help others, and had a mind that liked to figure things out – whatever that thing was. He was often playful and had, at times, a mischevious sense of humor.

George struggled with addiction for a long time. Though supported by a loving community, this ultimately took his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Ella Sharrett; his longtime friend and former partner, Alice Sharrett; his sister, Betsy Boyce (Ben); his aunt, Lea Lashley; and many nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by Kimberly Tootell and many dear friends. He was an easy man to love.

George had recently become interested in supporting the local organization Wild Grief. Should you be moved to donate in his memory, this would be a fitting place. Click HERE.
