It now 40 years since I first met Mr. Wilcox.
Through the years I have often thought about Mr. Wilcox and his influence on my early life. When people have asked me if I remember the teacher that had the largest influence on my life Mr. Wilcox always comes to my mind. I always said that I wanted to find him one day and tell him this with my own mouth. I was very saddened to see that he has passed.
I remember being in his physical education classes (PE).
We used to laughingly call it BMT (Basic military training).
He taught me to push forward when I was tired and wanted to give up.
In his drivers education classes he taught me how to really drive. He taught me what it was like to hit the brakes at 50 miles an hour to avoid hitting something. He taught me how to swerve. When he caught me cheating on a final exam for my drivers license, he taught me that it was necessary sometimes to fail a student to teach them something greater in life.
He taught me that it was OK to fail but it is not OK to cheat.
He made me believe in myself with some of his teaching tools, like the ‘swinging pendulum’. If you want something bad enough and willing to work long enough, eventually things will swing your way.
There is no way that I could write down all the conversations that I had with Mr. Wilcox.
But I can say this, I always sensed that he really cared.
By the time that I was 28 years old I had a manufacturing business with over 300 employees because I believed that I could do this. I believed that if I pushed hard enough or long enough that I could attain my goals.
I have often wondered if I could have obtain this without him helping me believe that anything is possible.
My children now carry many of the lessons from Mr. Wilcox without their knowledge.
Through the years I have often reflected on the lessons of another teacher. It is these lessons that have helped me bear the hurt of loosing friends that I have truly loved.
Over 2000 years ago the famous teacher Jesus Use the death of his dear friend to teach an object lesson to all future generations.
When they came to tell Jesus that his friend Lazarus had died his reply was that he was ‘sleeping’ and that he was going there to wake him up. The fact was that Lazarus had really died and had been dead for days. He walked up to his tomb and said “come out”. Lazarus has been brought back to life for everyone to see and this account was recorded in the Bible to give hope to people in the future.
Jesus said that the day would come where everyone who had died and was in the memory of God would come back to life.
These accounts are very clearly stated in the Bible, and easily understandable (John 5 and John 11).
It is my hope that in the future I can thank Mr. Wilcox face-to-face.
Thank you Mr. Wilcox! Thank you! Thank you!!!

Our favorite memory was when we talked Mr. Wilcox into letting us go through the drive through at McDonalds so we wouldn’t mess up the first time we did it by ourselves. We had to beg him like only teenage girls can, and offer to buy his lunch. We were laughing so hard and we think he enjoyed himself, too. Thanks for being a cool teacher and the best driver’s ed teacher. God Bless to him and his family.
