Obituary of Shirley Mathieson Wood

Shirley Mathieson Wood Shirley Mathieson Elliott was born on February 9, 1935 in Glasgow, Scotland. She lived in Kern, Scotland for most of her childhood with her parents, Thomas and Margaret Elliott and three brothers. Shirley and her family moved to the United States, arriving on October 29, 1953. Shirley became a naturalized U.S. citizen on April 20, 1959. She and her family settled in Seattle, Washington. Shirley married Melvin Lawrence Wood on February 26, 1959 in Seattle. The couple had five children and moved to Olympia to raise the family. Shirley operated a daycare in Olympia for almost 30 years, caring for many children in the Tumwater area. Shirley was very patient and caring and she loved children with all her heart. Shirley passed away November 24, 2011 after a long illness. She is survived by her husband, Melvin Wood; three brothers, Robert Lindsay, John and Thomas; children, Larry, Susan, Mark, Robert and Stuart; and grandchildren, Andre', Lindsay, Ian, Reesa, Elizabeth and Andrew. A memorial gathering for Shirley will be held on Friday, December 2, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Olympia Women's Club, 1002 Washington Street SE, Olympia, Washington. All friends and acquaintances are welcome. In lieu of gifts, a donation may be made to Safeplace, P.O. Box 2002, Olympia, WA 98507-2002.
