Obituary of Richard Joseph Usitalo

Richard (Dick) was a 44-year resident of Olympia. He was born May 12, 1926 in Poulsbo, Washington to Cora (Wager) and Richard Usitalo. He passed away at Garden Courte Memory Care Center on June 26, 2010.Dick grew up in Poulsbo and graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1944. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1949 with a B.S. and received his M.S. in 1956. Dick earned his Doctorate of Education at the University of Oregon in 1966. Dick began his career in 1949, teaching Physical Education at North Kitsap High School. In January of 1961 with the help of his mother’s matchmaking, Dick met Lois Hutchison. In July, they married and began their 49 years of marriage. Their love and commitment to each other was inspiring to many. After 17 years as a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendant for several school districts around the state Dick and his family moved to Olympia. He became the Director of Curriculum for Olympia School District until retirement in 1979. After a few months of retirement Dick began a second career with the Washington State School Directors Association as a Policy Consultant. He retired in 1993. Dick had a love of the outdoors and sports. He was especially proud of the 1954 State champion basketball team that he coached. Rain or shine he seldom missed attending a Husky football game. His adventures included all modes of travel to countless destinations. Dick had a special place in his heart for his children, grandchildren and great grandchild. He is survived by his beloved wife Lois; children; Linda Ingalls, Laural Usitalo, Cheryl West, Cathy (Doug) Drew, Rick (Melissa) Usitalo, grandchildren; Holly (Ian) Saunders, Tyson Ingalls, Steven Ariani; and great grandchild Ryan Saunders. Dick touched many people’s lives with his brilliant smile, wonderful personality, compassion and never ending positive attitude.
