We wanted you to know how much Gordon meant to various members of our family. Scouts, BHHS Band, PTA (THE,TMS,BHHS), Soccer, BHHS class of 2008, Living Water - I was amazed at how many people that were at the service that we had connections to that we didn't even know had a relationship with you and Gordon.
It was a beautiful service and it was so good to see Chris and Conner again. Gordon was an amazing man and had such a passion for everything he was involved with.
You and your family will be in our prayers. Its hard to make sense of this but wanted you to know that you have our love and prayers

Doug & I remember years of seeing Eileen & Gordon at school functions and gatherings, Ryan went to Boys' State with Conner, and Katharine and Lauren knew Katherine from school. Each of us have our different memories, but all of us know him as part of a great, caring, loving family. As I listened to the many wonderful tributes to Gordon today at the service, I was struck by not only how lucky his family was to have had him, but also how lucky he was to have had such a great family. You will all give each other the kind of love and support that family uniquely brings. Love and prayers to all of you.

We got to know you all a bit during several soccer seasons back when Chris and Lee played together in the BlackHills club. Gordon was one of the more softspoken parents of our rather boisterously vocal group, but there was no one more supportive of his child and teammates. Humor and kindness were always behind his words. I remember when Gordon told me about one of the joys in his life- volunteering as a baby-cuddler at the hospital for seriously ill children. And I remember thinking we could use a lot more men like him in the world.

The Swarthout family has been a blessing in my life. I have been volunteering at the ballet with you wanting to help others. What has really happended is I have been uplifted and helped by others. Eileen and Gordon have been a great example of selfless service and compassion. I am honored to have been in their company. I am a better person because of them. Their family has been prayed over during this time and they will find the blessings of Christ in their lives.

Although I have never met you, I know that Gordon truly loved you all. I remember times when he would talk of you and I would be amazed at what great Love and fondness he held for you. He spoke of you with such caring and admiration I couldn't help but think what a wonderful husband and fantastic father he must have been. That's very rare these days – and something that should be cherished.
Here at work he was very well liked and even admired by some. Personally, he was great to work with, not only for his knowledge, skills, and genuine desire to help, but he was fun to have around. He would make, what could be a mundane job, something fun and enjoyable. He had a great sense of humor and had me in stitches more than just a few times. I can't say enough about him. He was a great guy and will be sorely missed. But we will always have the memories. Memories allow us to gather roses in the winter. I wish your homes are filled with roses all year round and for many years to come.

Eileen and family: Sydne and I are deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Gordon’s death. His life will always remind me that it is better to give than to receive. It was such a pleasure, especially in the Scouting program, to watch Gordon work his magic with the kids. He was a gifted man who showed us all how to be a strong leader with a light touch and a smile.

My thoughts are with the Swarthout family. Gordon touched my life during my youth and formative years as my friend's father, scout troop leader and soccer booster club president and I will never forget him. His influence was so positive for all the kids that got to hear his morning wake up songs at scout camp or late night stories about his life. I can appreciate even more now how much he gave to his family and his community and country. I can't fathom the loss you know; I send my prayers and will cherish the memories I have of your father.

Dear Eileen, Conner, Chris, and Katherine,
Was so sorry to hear of your loss and know what a sad time this is.
I would like to share this Native American saying that helps all of us remember that loved ones are always near.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the drops of autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of birds circling in flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Please take care and remember Gordon will always be present.

Gordon, I met you back in 1989 when you joined our customer support team. I always admired your service ethic and your always-at-the-ready sense of humor. You taught me a lot, watching you, working with you, and later working for you. Your intelligence, humor, passion for service, and obvious love for your family served as both tether and power-line for me. You are still, a *very* remarkable soul! Fly well my friend.

Dear Eileen, Conner, Chris and Katherine….The past few days we have been deeply saddened by the loss of a good friend. We can’t imagine what you must be going through. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Gordon was a great man. He was always willing to get involved and lead people to solve difficult problems. I recall times during Ballet set constructions, when we were completely disorganized and Gordon would jump in and solve the problem. I will never forget his stories about his time in Iraq. This is a great loss to you and the family but also a great loss to society. Gordon had so much to give, so much energy. It is frustrating and difficult to understand how this could have happened. I think we all wish we could have had one more chance to talk with him. We will miss him and remember him always!

I worked with Gordon for eleven years and was impressed with his kind heart, his positive attitude and his genuinely welcoming nature. I did not have the honor of working with him daily, but every time we did spend any time, we rarely failed to have conversations of real depth and meaning. There was a lot to Gordon, more than just that sweet nature--he thought about so many things and in such depth. His very presence in the world made it better.
