Obituary of Lois Sutherland

Lois K Larner Sutherland Lois K Larner Sutherland passed away in Lacey, WA, on September 9, 2010, after a long illness. Born in Galesburg, Illinois, on May 13, 1921, Lois grew up in Macomb and Warsaw, Illinois. After graduating from Warsaw High School, she attended the University of Illinois, earning a degree in Home Economics and a teaching certificate. On October 5, 1941, she married John Bruce Sutherland III (Jack). Two months later, Jack deployed to serve in the Pacific. During his absence, Lois taught in a one-room country school in Illinois beside the Mississippi River. In 1947, the family moved to Bothell, Washington, where Lois became involved in church, community and youth organizations. For more than 60 years, she was a member of the Bothell United Methodist Church, serving as the church's librarian and as a member of the church's administrative board. She was also a member of the interdenominational Bible Study Fellowship, Community activities included the Bothell Library Board, the Adult Education Council, and the Northshore Recreation Council. Together with a stroke patient, she started the Everett Stroke Club. Long active in Parent Teacher Associations, in the 1960s she began a drug awareness program for parents. A leader of youth groups, she was involved in 4H, Campfire, and the Cub Scouts. When the children were older, she attended graduate classes at the University of Washington and became a licensed Real Estate Broker. After moving to Bothell, Lois acquired many new skills, ranging from mink breeding to fireplace and house building. She loved gardening and canning the produce, growing rhododendrons and trees from seed, and sailing. She was a member of the Washington Farm Forestry Association. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Eula Cordell Larner, her sister Ethelyn Larner Gardner, and son Robert Frank Sutherland. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Jack, brother, Frank Larner, of Lacey, WA,Sister,Rachel Larner Jone, Arlington, VA, son John Bruce Sutherland IV, and daughter-in-law, Fatemeh, of White Hall, AR, and daughter, Janet Lynn Sutherland, of Bremen, Germany. Interment will be at Floral Hills Cemetery, Lynnwood, WA. Remembrances in Lois' name may be made to the Bothell United Methodist Church, the Union Gospel Mission, or a charity of your choice.
