It was indeed an honor and privilege to have known and worked with this man. His devotion to his family, his friends, his work, and God and Country were exemplary. I had the preasure of working with him on Homeland Security (Law Enforcement Terrorism Protection Planning) projects and highly valued his leadership and guidance.
Would it not be for the knowledge that eventually I will see him again, I would be heartbroken. My prayers are for his family in these difficult times. Matt was God present to us.

Juli, Megan, and Jakob I want you to know what an honor and privilege it was to know and work with Matt. Matt, Kevin, and I were in the same State Patrol Academy class and then assigned to Seattle together working in the same detachment. I hold fond memories of Matt both on and off duty where we shared alot of fun. An example was when he announced he was marrying Juli a "secret" bachelor party was organized by detachment members and we arranged to pick him up at his parent's home. When we arrived we all tackled Matt (which was no small chore) and chained a bowling ball around his ankle which he graciously wore the remainder of the evening. Several other detachment members (including Kevin) ended up wearing the bowling ball as a matter of tradition and their names would be engraved onto it to mark the occasion of marrage. I don't know what happended to the bowling ball as I moved home to Ellensburg where I continue to work for WSP-CID but Matt's character will always be engraved in my memory just like the old bowling ball. Your family continues to be in my prayers and thank you for sharing Matt with me.

Julie, Jakob and Megan; Matt was the first person I actually met when I stepped into the Oregon State University Football Dorm – August 1984. We immediately became friends. It was an honor to be known as Matt’s friend. During college, Matt and I were inseparable. We lived together for almost 3 years while we attended college. Matt and I were close as brothers – my parents were ready to adopt him because he was such a good influence on my life. Matt was always the “calm one” during our college years. He always had the ability to calm me down and keep me out of trouble. During our idle moments in college, we would sit for hours and talk about his life growing up in Seattle, the endless summers he spent at Lake Chelan (he really loved that place) and where/how we were going to travel the world together when we “finally grew up.” On a few occasions Matt and I would drive down to my hometown (San Francisco Area) – My childhood friends immediately love him and accepted him into their world. That was the type of person Matt was – you just could not help but be immediately be drawn to him. He was a gentle giant who had the brain of a genius. I loved him so much. I will miss him something awful. I will never forget his magnetic smile and willingness to always want to have fun. Matt will always remain forever burned in my memory as a man of honor, courage and love. I remember him calling me when he met you – he was so excited. I could tell he was in love. I knew at that moment that you were going to have the honor of being the recipient of Matt’s love and affection. Susan and I both remember your wedding day – we both so happy for you and Matt. Nothing could have made Matt more proud or happy as when you both were fortunate enough to bring Jakob and Megan into this world. Matt was a beaming father. Matt loved being a policeman – he would tell me how great it was being a policeman. He was the person who actually convinced me to go into the law enforcement. Matt loved his fellow troopers. He had a bond of brotherhood with those folks – like we had back in college. Losing Matt to the Lord is painful and I’m having a hard time trying to make sense of all of it – my only explanation that seems to make sense is that the Lord needed a 6’6” angle with soul as pure as Matt’s. I will never forget him – he was one a kind.

Doctor & Mrs. Loren B. Stone:
Loren and Sharon, I just, by accident, discovered the picture and story about your Son - Mathew, and his passing! I don't normally read these, but, something caused me to turn to that page, and the picture of Matthew, "jumped out at me", and I said - - "no!!.
I know that the both of you had moved down to Olympia to be near him and his family, in his fight - following his heart transplant, and the complications following that.
We are both saddened that this had to happen so soon for you and his wife and children!!

I didn't know Matt, though as a local heart transplant recipient, I knew of him. From all that I've heard of him and all that I've read of him, Matt was a good man who bore his burden with courage, humor, and dignity, and was the kind of person this world can ill afford to lose. My family's thoughts and prayers are his family, and with the many whose lives he touched.

I first met Matt when I was working for the Fire Protection Bureau during Christmas break from college 2000-2001. Since they didn’t have a work space for me I would often work at his desk while he wasn’t at the office and listen to his CD’s while I worked (those CD’s are what got me into country music!). I saw Matt again when he was up at District 1 or at Regional Homeland Security Meetings when he was back with the Fire Protection Bureau working with the Homeland Security Grants. I remember sitting with him (believe it was in Spokane) in 2005 and having breakfast before a Regional meeting catching up on life and regardless of his condition at the time he was happy just to be alive. I knew Matt was an amazing guy in just the short amount of time we worked together; a true man who knew that being kind and respectful to others would earn you the same in return. Matt will be missed by so many people.

We had the pleasure of meeting Matt and getting to know him from the U.W.
Him and I cruised the hallways complaining about the awkwardness of our LVAD's. I received my transplant in November, but visited Matt every time I went to the U.W. for check ups. He always had a smile and encouraging words for his fellow patients.
He was a very sweet and kind man who will be sorely missed,..
many members in our support group have and will continue to pray for Matt's family.

I got to know Matt when I transferred into CID in 2003. Matt was already established at CID HQ and he was an invaluable resource while I was trying to learn the CID way of doing business. I could always count on Matt to bring me up to speed on new things, educate me on the unknown and mentor me on how to transition from the road to detectives. Although I lost touch with Matt when he promoted and left CID I will always consider him a friend who was willing to go the extra mile for everyone in need. My thoughts and prayers are with Matt and his entire family.

My heart is so sad to hear Mattie is gone. He was always such a bright, wonderful person to be near. The time I was honored to spend with him in our office was a pleasure. His congenial jabs at me because of my love of the Mariners will always have a place in my heart.
We always had great conversations about family trips to Disneyland and how he enjoyed it as much as Jake and Megan! I smile now thinking of his face the last time he talked about their trip.
Julie - remember you are in my prayers and thoughts. Thank you for sharing Mattie with us.
My Love to you all - CathyO

Our thoughts and prayers are with you guys. Matt and all the Boston Harbor crew really took a non Boston Harbor kid in (Jacob)for that magical fall ball season that the team went undefeated. I was very touched when Matt presented me with a blue Boston Harbor shirt to wear coaching first base during summer ball. Matt will be missed and I will try and remember his patience with the kids when I'm coaching. I know Jacob is really looking forward to seeing Jake all his Boston Harbor buddies when they get to Oly High. If you guys ever need anything, please call.
