To Family, Gary, and other neighbors and friends of Esther: we always enjoyed visiting with Esther when we dropped by on Pear Street to visit the Pear Street Gardens. At times Esther seemed to appear out of "nowhere" with her walker. She watched over Pear Street and as she had more medical problems we noted that Gary & Bry plus the neighborhood began to watch over her.
We will miss this amazing woman.

I have fond memories of Esther and remember the day I first experienced her visit as we began work on Gary's and Bry's water feature in 2001. I eventually made it into her kitchen for cookies and tea during the time we began the first gardening interventions at her casa. A great sense of humour and to the point and a perspective that cut through the BS. I was amazed at her ability to navigate with her walker or caregiver at her side.
She was a most special human being and I believe left this world on her own terms.

To Esther's Family,
Esther was a truly magnificent person. She took care of me and brother David Grout when we were her little neighbors on Madrona Beach. Esther, and Mom, Corinne Grout Palmer, were good friends and often traded baby-sitting responsibilities. I remember when as kids, my brother, myself, Stevie and Chuckie built blanket forts in our yard or Esther's yard. Our dear Moms always let the four of us "build" in our yards.
When Esther retired from the Washington State Senate with the Health and Human Services Committee, she brought me on board to be her replacement.
Esther was one of the kindest persons I have ever known and I will always love her.
Sincerely,
Gail Dahm

My memories of Esther are of love and caring for all. She so loved my family, each of us and let us know. I would listen to her "hill stories" and know how poweful she was when she wanted to assist senior. Such a tender loving soul and such a good listener, She was one of my favorite people in the whole world, I admired and respected her as much as I did Mother Theresa. Both have such beautiful caring souls for all around them. I am blessed to have walked the path of life with her. Hugs to a special angel. Barb and family

Esther was my Cub Scout "Den Mother" .... She was the mother of Steve, my best friend through my elementary and high school days. I have many great memories with the time spent with the family; Esther, Ed, Steve and Chucky at their home and on their many trips and on their boat. She was a GREAT den mother and wonderful person. I will always remember her.

Esther's bright spirit will live on in our neighborhood -- it's sparkle will inspire and tickle her Pear Street friends for years to come. We are grateful for the positive energy, common sense wisdom, humor, and encouragement she shared. Esther is a role model for how to love life, be an individual, and retain a good measure of sass and spunk into old age. We carry our dear friend in our hearts.

Esther, you were my friend from the first time I saw you. When I became the executive director for retired teachers you offered to assist me. You came in one day and did not leave until your retirement years later. They always thought I was the Exec. but in reality you were. I could not have done without you both at work and as a very very good friend. I will always love you. You were a friend to all of the retired teachers in the state and everyone else who knew you.

I worked with Esther at the Washington State Retired Teacher's Accociation - she was a wonderful lady but quick with the "red pencil" when it came to editing. We all loved her very much. She was a great lady.

Esther, I will always remember your wisdom guiding me through the mine fields in the Legislature when I was the lobbyist for WSRTA. We had many political discussions which made me more aware for the need to be a participant in the political arena. You were a true, dedicated servant to the seniors of this sate.

Esther, what a strong courageous woman you were. You will be missed on Pear Street, but forever in our memories as we recall seeing you walking down the street rain or shine, sitting at the table in your kitchen giving us a wave as we walked by. Always a nice smile and kind words to say, and pets for Woody and Jenny.
Sweet Lady indeed.
