Obituary of Yvonne G. Spies

Yvonne G. Spies Died March 21, 2005 in Olympia, Washington. Yvonne was born January 13, 1934, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Harrison and Helen Hug. She graduated from Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri, and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities 1954-55. She taught PE at Herculaneum High School before marrying Chuck Spies in 1958. Yvonne was active in the League of Women Voters, becoming a member of the board of the Missouri State League, eventually serving as secretary, vice-president and president. She also served on the board of the National League of Women Voters. After she and Chuck moved to Washington in 1978, she became executive director of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Washington. At the State Capitol, she was a well-known advocate for women’s and children’s health legislation. In her teen-age years, Yvonne was an accomplished badminton and tennis player, playing in state competitions in Missouri. At the vacation home at Lake of the Ozarks, she drove the ski-boat for endless hours for the kids, and the fishing boat endless hours for herself and was even observed to have gone swimming once. She took up golf again after moving to Lake St. Clair, playing at the Nisqually Valley Golf Club in Yelm, and (true to form) was soon organizing tournaments for Tacoma Women’s Golf Association. Yvonne is survived by her husband Chuck, children Scott and Sherry, son-in-law Bill, and grandchildren Nora and Helen. Donations to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or Planned Parenthood.
