Obituary of Mel Smeder

Mel Smeder Mel Smeder passed away October 11, 2011 in Chehalis, Washington. He was born March 28, 1948 in Bellingham, WA to Vera and Fred Smeder. He graduated from Nooksack Valley High in Everson, WA in 1966. He married Maureen Assink on March 30, 1977 in Lake Tahoe, NV. Mel began working in the lumber industry at Jerstedt Lumber when he was 12 years old. He entered wholesale lumber sales in Portland, OR in 1988. He finished his sales career at Tubafor (TMI) in Morton, WA. He was a member of the Hoo Hoo Lumberman’s Association in Tacoma, WA. Mel was a “master baker” of banana bread and cookies. He liked good food and wines. He also loved to golf, and was always ready for a game. A favorite part of golfing was searching out stray golf balls. He was a member of the Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis, WA. Mel is survived by his wife, Maureen of Chehalis; godson, Ethan (Liz) VanLeeuwen of Salem, OR; special niece, Carri (Wade) Kentch and their children of Ferndale, WA; brother, Harry Den Adal of Wenatchee, WA; sisters, Mary Ann Brooks of Yakima, WA, Margaret (Tim) Teal of Bremerton, WA, Shirley (Louis) Schwartz of Victorville, CA; sisters-in-law, Sheila (Jim) Trumpower and Karen Funk of Bellingham, WA; brother-in-law, Ron (Pat) Assink of Wenatchee, WA. He will be missed by his family and many special friends in Bellingham and throughout the U.S. and Canada. No services are planned.
