Obituary of Ray E. Simmonds

No visitation Ray E. Simmonds, 88, a 52 year resident of Olympia, died February 12, 2007. Ray was born November 18, 1918 in St. James, Minnesota to Ernest and Ellen Simmonds. He lived in Bucoda throughout his teen years. He was married for 66 years to the former Elma Bennett, who survives. He served 3 years in World War II in the 3rd infantry division where he accomplished 5 major campaigns in French Morraco, Germany, France, and Sicily, including Anzio Beachhead. Ray retired from the Department of Labor and Industries after 30 years. After retirement he owned and operated Ray’s Barber Shop and Southgate Barbershop. He was a Horseshoe Pitching State Champion for many years. He also enjoyed bowling, golf, played baseball with major league ball players while in the service, and played pool at the Elks and was a wonderful ballroom dancer. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, Elks, Veteran of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. Including his wife, Elma, Ray is survived by his son, Al Simmonds of Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2007 at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. A gathering of family and friends will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 2902 ½ Martin Way E., Olympia.
