Frances (Torpey) Shumway Fran Shumway died July 3, 2011 in her home at Panaroma. She was born May 31, 1918 in Spokane, the only child of Clarke and Eula Torpey of Farmington, Washington. She was the granddaughter to Washington State’s 10th Governor, Louis F. Hart. Mrs. Shumway attended Washington State University and graduated from Eastern Washington University. She taught many children for over 30 years in Olympia and North Thurston Schools. She was married to Stuart E. Shumway for 55 years before his death in 1997. They made their home on Johnson Point for many years. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, John Shumway, who passed in 2010, and is survived by two daughters, Susan Rogers of Olympia and Mollie Shumway of Paris, France; one son, Steven Shumway of Olympia. Fran had two daughters-in-law, Patsy and Mary Lou Shumway, and a son-in-law, Ron Rogers. The four grandchildren (Jesse Shumway, Molly Rogers Ostrander, Jeff Shumway and Lauren Boulanger) and five great grandchildren were added joys in her life. Mrs. Shumway was an active member of The First Methodist Church in Olympia, and worked for many years at the Nisqually Reach Nature Center and served on the Panaroma Resident Council to name a few of her volunteer interests. Her hobbies were knitting, gardening, pie making, volunteering to help others, and all activities with her many friends and family. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Eastern Washington University Scholarship Fund, 102 Hargreaves Hall, Cheney, WA 99004 or to a favorite charity.
