Helen aka "Little Helen" posted a condolence
Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Lauri and Julie,
I was 4 years old when your Dad, my oldest brother, married your Mom. We became Helen Marie/Big Helen and Helen Catherine/Little Helen. Even when I surpassed her in height the nicknames remained! A lifetime of memories--her gift for gab, her wonderful cooking (THE VINERTERTI CAKE), holidays together, her piano playing, her hummingbird friends, her command of the English language and literature. But most of all I always admired how she handled being a single Mom after Jim (aka Dick) died. It was a hard time for the family but especially for Helen Marie and the girls. She did a darn good job raising them to be just as smart, intelligent and giving as she was. Thank you, Helen Marie, for doing that. Jim would have been so proud. I'm also glad that I was able to spend some time with her before she moved to Lacey, by taking her to doctor appts. and then going to lunch together. We had some great chats. I know this will be a huge loss for you girls and your families, but you both know that we will always be there for you in whatever way we can. We love you.

This is sad. Helen Marie was a gifted and lively person. I'll always remember the Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners, the wonderful cooking and that amazing layer cake...the first time I ever tasted rum or whatever it was she put in there. I remember how incredibly smart she was but at the same time always humble.
I'm sorry for your loss. She will be fondly remembered.

Dear Lauri,
I am so sorry for your loss, your Mom sounded like she was lots of fun and a good friend to many people. I hope you can remember her with smiles and joy very soon. You and I met on an Inter-Varsity trip to Guatemala nearly 32 years ago...I always remembered you and thought you were so brave to give your life to God's service. I have thought of you many times over the years and wondered if you were still in Central America.
My email address is libraryladysandy@gmail.com if you'd like to respond. Remember that I am praying for your family.

It was a privilege to have known your mother who was like no one else. She was an amazing lady who raised two fine daughters and did so much for so many. She will be missed.

The older I get the more I understand my mother.
As I think of your mom I remember her intelligence and offbeat sense of humor, I am thankful that she passed that on to Julie and Lauri and that this family was a part of my life.

Helen and I became reacquainted after the death of her brother Jim, who was a dear friend of mine. We became email friends, tho we only saw each other once in the past several years. Helen was a bit of a goof-ball, but was so intelligent and fun. I am so sorry that she is gone, but she won't be forgotten!

Of Helen, my sister-in-law, I have many memories... her beautiful creamy complexion, great fund of knowledge, the skillful way she could pack details into a story, her willingness to share knowledge about music, gardening, cooking. She was a crossword whiz. Helen had a great sense of humor, fantastic gifts of being warm and caring to friends on the bus, elderly at the adlt day health center, Rotary First Harvest. Steadfastness was her watchword as she led on after my brother's untimely death. She kept that house with the leaky basement going, as well as the garden, blackberries, flowers, the girls' activities, their schooling, and her work. She visited me in Norway in 1983, and we had a great time sightseeing. I wish I had been able to see her before she died, but I'm glad she's free of that leaky basement and the long time breathing difficulties. One day we'll share another time when my brother goads me into doing another dumb thing and again she'll say, "I told you so."
The photos of her here are wonderful. I love that smile!

I am so sad to hear that such a wonderful person, volunteer and friend has passed. I had the great pleasure of working with Helen when she volunteered at Rotary First Harvest. Could she ever take minutes! And she was so willing to do whatever needed to be done. It was always fun to talk with her – she loved and was so proud of her family! When I moved on to Northwest Harvest we continued to visit by phone – I always looked forward to talking with her. She was so generous and loved to help others. If only we could all make such a difference!

Hi Lauri, Julie and families,
We just read of Helen's death, and are thinking of her today. It was 1970 when you started babysitting for us, Lauri, and you were our kids' favorite! I had so many good conversations with your mom over the years, right up until she moved off the island. I always think of you-all when I drive past your old street. God bless you, as you mourn for her.

Our best memories of Helen are from the days we were neighbors on Mercer Island -- friendship and parties with Dick and Helen, playtimes with Lauri and Julie. We even remember Rumford the Cat. We are so glad we kept in touch over the years!

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Helen was such a wonderful volunteer for RFH for many years. I think of her every time I'm taking minutes at our board meetings, and wonder how she did it so effortlessly for so many years. What a wonderful lady! She will be missed.
