Dear Coach,
We first met in August of 1950 in the locker room at Raymond High School (RHS) as we were issued football gear. You asked me what number I wanted to wear. I told you that it didn't make any difference to me, as I only wanted to play. I told you that anything with a "7" in it would be fine. You pulled a jersey off of the shelf, saying, "This is a good number." When I looked, it was number "17." Thank you for allowing me to wear "your" number.
I played for you, took your great shop classes--building many things for the school, coached with you at Sammamish High School, was inducted into the Cental Washington University (CWU) Hall of Fame with you, and was named into the all-time CWU Football Dream Team with you. A lot of similarities.
Our friendship and closeness over the year has been very enjoyable. I'll miss our phone calls, card sending, letter exchanges, and get togethers. You have been a big influence in my life, as well as a good friend.

Coach Osgood was my shop teacher and football coach/assistant basketball coach at Raymond High School. He was one of those memorable persons you meet during your life. I was happy to have been his student and friend. He was a very compassionate person despite his being an ex-marine and sports coach. I recall his giving me great helpful guidance on several occasions during high school. He always gave me a chance to do better and I felt that he always had my best interests at heart. We kept in touch over the years. I also became a teacher and taught in the Bellevue Schools at the same time he became the football coach and teacher at Sammamish High School in Bellevue. Coach, as we all called him, came to our RHS class reunions. He always looked much younger than his age and always had a friendly, positive attitude about everything. He was very popular with all of our class. I really respected and liked Coach Osgood and am very happy to have been one of his friends. To me he is one of those most memorable characters that one is fortunate to meet during ones lifetime. There are many former students out there who were very lucky to have had Coach as a teacher and/or coach. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. My very best regards to his family.

I met Bob while I was working in the Greenwater area. Small world, my H.S. Football coach and Bob had coached together. He was always smiling and proud of both his military experience and coaching young athletes. A gentle man with great stories!

He hand crafted a community of quality, integrity, and skill.
He designed, built, and leaves a classroom that still provides the best facility for students in the state of Washington- to this day…
He taught with compassion, honor, and safety was never to be compromised-ever.
His thoughtful hand guides even today’s students in their quest to learn.
He taught a wood shop teacher how to teach.
I miss him………..

Among my colleagues during 37 years of public school teaching none demonstrated by action or character the ideal model for boys and young men to emulate as did Ozzie. Ozzie exercised the highest quality of integrity and ethics, maintained unselfconciously a warm, outgoing personality and exercised a sincere regard for the limitations of others. It was, indeed, a high privilege to have known and worked in the same profession with Ozzie as he was, as a professional and as an individual, a truly sterling individual in every conceivable way.

I remember so vividly when Bob came to Raymond to coach our football team who until then didn't know what a winning season was !! - - He came with 2 others that were as great an influence on our school as Bob & that was Andy Anderson who later became principal & a legenend in his own time & Bob Svendsen who was our basketball coach. Those three were highly influencial in the turn around from being losers to attaining a "winning attitude". We may not have won every football game under Bob but because of him we learned we could win & that losing wasn't all that bad as long as you knew you did your best & went into it with a positive attitude. He was quiet & seemed rather shy & another thing I remember is the big crush our P.E. teacher Francis Weiss had on him but Bob paid her no attention - - at least in front of us he didn't !!:):):) - - - He always tried to attend all reunions he was invited to except the past couple years & we knew something was wrong as we had no response from him. My condolences to the family - - your Uncle Bob was a great guy & one that is remembered after all these years by those of us who knew him at Raymond High School. Darlene Keeton Clements

Bob was such an unassuming man. One day while incorrectly belt sanding a wooden stay for a pram we were building in class, I shredded the belt on the wheel. It flew across the room coming to rest at Mr. Osgood's feet. When he picked it up and walked over to me I couldn't see him, my safety glasses had completely fogged over in fear. I was just sure he was going to "thump me", but instead he took me aside and quietly told me that I had created an opportunity to replace the belt on the sander. While we did this together, he pointed out my mistake quietly and I learned. At this stage of Bob's life, I believe that's exactly what he wanted to do, teach. I took a number of classes from Bob, and I never was nervous around him again, even when he raised his voice, as it was always about safety when he would make sure everyone understood exactly what had happened, how to avoid it, and why.
At our 30 year class reunion Mr. Osgood was invited, and happily for me, came to the party. We talked a bit about the politics of the day, and somehow got on the subject of my dad's military career. I had been reading about the Pacific Theater and he mentioned being at Peleliu, and the horrible casualties suffered there. We spoke a bit more about a few things, but I'll never forget that feeling of having been around him in school and never really knowing all the things that had brought him to our school. I've thought about Bob quite a few times in recent years, thanks to Hollywood, Tom Hanks and The Pacific. I've thought about all those that did not come home, and how those that did must have looked so curiously at the children crowing and pruning and judging as they came in contact with men like Bob. I'm so glad Mr. Osgood chose to teach, and feel lucky to have been one of his student. I am eternally thankful that men like him walked our earth.

Ozzie was a guy who always made you feel like you were special to him. He was my parent's friend and my dad's college teammate and we all referred to him as Uncle Oz.
I sat in front of Oz at Husky games for several years and I miss having him punch me in the back when he got excited by a play, or more specifically, a bad call by the officials.
What a great guy...

I played for Bob on the Raymond High School football team in 1950. I also took his woodworking class. Both as a teacher and a coach he was always upfront with his comments and very positive. He seemed most happy at Greenwater building cabinets and other woodworking projects. Visiting with him was a special time.
