Duane, I love you so much and miss you more each day. You are my light and my life and my best friend. The kids miss you and talk about you almost every day. They are beginning to talk about the memories of you. Some good, some bad and some funny. You were the best Dad a child could ever have and all of your children will remember you that way. I dream of you every night. I know you are in Heaven with our little angel, Hannah. Give her a big kiss and hug for me. I will be there to hold both of you someday, so save a place for me. Cody misses you terribly. Send him a message if you can, he needs you and needs to know you are there.
When we were at your grave after the Military ceremony, we were walking next to you and Cody looked up and saw a bright light (the sun) peeking through the clouds and said to me,"Look Mom, there's the LIGHT!" I said, "Yes, do you think Dad is going to the LIGHT now?" and he said "Yes, I think he's going into the LIGHT now." He seemed to be at peace with that. Maybe it was some kind of closure for him. I hope so.
You always told me that we were SOUL MATES as well as best friends. I know that is true. You always called me 'LADY', I will always be YOUR LADY. I love you , I love you, I love you, I love you forever. Your Best Friend, Soul Mate, your Lady - Rita

Just days before Duane's passing we were out at the Soldier's Home on a visit. Words were few and far between, yet he commented 4 or 5 times about his granddaughter. "Oh what a pretty girl" and "She's so pretty, look at her!" This is a testament to Duane's character and the way in which children stirred his spirit. The connection and love our children felt from grandpa was real and genuine, as it was towards Art and I as well. I always told people my in-laws were angels. And now those words are truer than ever. We will miss you dad!

On behalf of Thurston County Family and Juvenile Court, we want to express our deepest sympathy to Rita and family as you struggle with the loss of Duane. Duane was part of the first class of trained volunteers for the Court Appointed Child Advocates for Thurston County. He was dedicated to providing the best "voice of a child" to dependency proceedings.
I will remember Duane as the most strong, yet gentle and caring man that I had the privelege to meet. Thank you Duane for all of the years that you were able to "speak up for a child".

Duane, will be welcomed and playing with all the children in heaven. He touched many lives of children and families here on earth in Thurston County and was a great advocate for them as a CASA. He and Rita were special parents and a loving couple that enjoyed their life through the eyes of children. Thank you Duane & Rita for all you have done and your caring hearts.

Rita,
I was saddened to learn of Duane's passing. It was obvious that he cared about his kids, and he was there for them...as are you!
Josh, Hanna, Moira, Cody & Family,
Your dad will be watching over you from another place as you continue through school, pursue your goals and have children of your own. Know that he cared for you, wanted the best for you and was proud of each of your accomplishments.
All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers during this time.
Most sincerely,
Susan Kaelin

I was in a group at WSDOT that had coffee together most mornings before starting work. Duane was one of our bunch.
I got acquainted with Duane over the years and grew to admire and respect him. His life will serve as a model for others.
I will never forget him. My deepest sympathy.

I am saddened to hear the news about Duane. I worked with him at WSDOT while I was going to college. I never met a person so dedicated to children. I still can remember the day I accompanied Rita and Duane to SeaTac to pick up Hanna-Mari. The love in their eyes and hearts the first time they saw her still brings a smile to my face. And the stories of Joshua... it still makes me laugh. Duane was a wonderful person. My heart goes out to Rita and all the children.

Such a wonderful and loving man! I will remember the pride in his voice as he spoke about each of his children. You were all very special to him and made him the extrodinary person that he was. Rita, he absolutely adored and cherished you--it made him blush just to mention your name. I regret that I will be out of town during his service, but know that you will be in my thoughts this weekend. I'll be looking for those little ones in "kids at play" this summer!
Fondly, Jan
