There never seems to be enough time in a day but as we know, life can be way too short so I now am finally taking the time to reflect on our memories of Mike. Our friendship started back at Fort Riley KS, where Mike and my Mike were stationed in the Army. We all hit it off and had a fun time together, even though we didn't go too far with our young sons in tow. We returned to Wisconsin and they on to Fort Campbell KY and eventually back home to WA but for some 34 years across all the miles, we amazingly shared our day to day lives through correspondence. Mike & Barbara visited us years ago in Wisconsin and finally we had an opportunity to visit Washington a few years ago. Of course, we called Mike and Barb and it was just like we picked up where we left off. Mike gave us a grand tour, including Mt. St. Helen's and all the hot fishing and hunting spots, too! We had a wonderful time and will cherish this visit more than ever now! The 2 Mike's were like two peas in a pod talking hunting and fishing. We'll always be grateful we made that trip! Barb, Love to you and your family! Take care!

Barb and family-
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I worked at with Mike at Fred's for a couple of years. He was one of the hardest working men I have ever known. I enjoyed listening to his stories about his fishing and hunting exploits. I will take him on his word that he was the best fisherman ever. Although, I never actually saw any of his catches. He also was one of the funniest people I have met and had an unforgettable laugh.
I will always remember working with Mike, Little Mikey, Dakon, Brian, Burdie and Carrie. I can't count how many times he covered for us "kids" and kept us out of trouble with Fred.
I saw Mike a few years ago and we ended up talking and laughing for a couple of hours over coffee. He will be missed.
Fish On, Mikey!!!

Oh, Uncle Mike. If I could only carry with me one memory of Uncle Mike, it would be his big, huge, most gentle hands that God has ever created. My most vivid memory of him is a loud laugh and an even louder clap made by those two big hands of his. It was always as a result of him making fun of somebody!
Even though I’ll forever miss him, the memories I have of him will never fade.
Aunt Barbara and Uncle Mike; you will always be my biggest heroes, in your love for each other and your life made together.
Love and God Bless.

I pray that I may live to fish.......
Until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast,
I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's great landing net
And peacefully asleep
That in His mercy I be judged
Big enough to keep.

When I first moved to Rochester Mikey was one of my best friends, which was an honor to me as Mikey had a rugged persona. Mikey only gave me two things, friendship and a hard time. If I needed a hard time Mikey was the person to see.
My most memorable time with Mikey was when my Dad was out of town fishing. Mikey gave me a call and said “why aren’t you fishing”? I replyied by saying where are we going? Mikey paused and thought for a minute and said “you, Kelly, Chuck and I are going to out fish your dad, and catch a big one”. I asked where are we going and Mikey said “you will know when we get there, Just be at the house at 5:30 AM”. I got their next morning and climbed into the back seat of Mikeys truck and proceeded to get some sleep. When I woke up we were at the boat launch. We fished unsuccessfully for most of the morning then Wham! Chuck had an 8 foot sturgeon about 300 pounds. Yep Mikey was right when he said we would out fish my Dad. That was the last time I went fishing alone with Mikey. Man I’m going to miss that “big kid.

Barb…
As I reflect about some quality days spent with Mikey fishing and telling fish stories. I will not forget Mike’s huge laugh and compassion for others. Mikey had a keen eye for those that were less fortunate them him. If Mikey thought that someone was in need he would offer the shirt off his back to help them. Mikey put others needs in front of his own.
My brother once said to me “If life is a journey then life’s greatest tragedy would be to not have enjoyed the trip” Mikey enjoyed the trip to its fullest. The passing of Mikey has left a void in our hearts and community; Mikey’s passing has also caused his friends and family to draw nearer to each other.
I will miss fishing, hunting and simply hanging out with Mikey. I will also miss seeing the relationship he had with my son, but the thing I will miss the most is his friendship.

I have many, but my first memories of Mike were when I was just a youngster, somewhere between liking toys…and liking girls. My dad and I would go for tire service at Fred’s, and Mike would always find a friendly reason to give me a hard time. I didn’t really know much except his name was Mike and I enjoyed going and being razzed. In his way, Mike made me- and I’m sure lots of youngsters- feel accepted.

Life. A crazy turn of events. Barb I am so very sorry. Mikey will always be remembered. I have so many memories with him from my childhood to present. From Tracy and I fighting over who was going to have to sit behind him in the old orange blazer so we wouldn't get spit on to watching his old blue sled drift down river with all of us standing on the island in the cowlitz. Mikey was truly a one of a kind that people couldn't dislike. My grandpa drove down from Bellevue for every set of tires he bought and would stand at the station for the rest of the day BSing with him. I am sure him and Bill Z. are fishing right now and arguing about who knows what but they are having a blast. Please let me know if there is anything I can ever do. Cut down more trees or whatever. I was one of the few who had the opportunity to work with Mike on the maintenance crew along my way to becoming a teacher. One of the first things I saw in Mike was the way he worked--he reminded me of my dad--he worked like a machine! The second thing I realized was that I was going to have to prove myself worthy of his respect...I was a girl afterall! :) Within a week, we were razzing each other and joking around like two old friends...the many hours of weeding and mowing and lining the fields I spent with Mike was the foundation of a great friendship. Years later, it would light up my day to see Mike when he would stop by RMS and check in on me or give me a bad time about the bushes outside my window he had just cut down! I cannot say enough about the countless hours he put in over the summers and weekends and evenings getting our district grounds ready for graduations, games, and celebrations--he would even drag the soccer field before games at the middle school to try to combat the super moles living underneath it. This year's RMS soccer team was so excited that Mike painted the soccer lines a different color than the football ones...and they were devasted to hear that their beloved maintenance guy was in the hospital on the day of their last game--they dedicated their game to Mike, winning it for him!
I believe Mike felt like the time and effort he put into our district was his way of giving back to the community he loved...I am hoping that he can see he touched so many people's lives in a positive way--whether with a joke, or a story, or a simple hello in the hallway...he was the best and will be greatly missed!

Mike and I once convinced a fly ash trucker we were brothers and Jerry Newman was our Dad.We had all a lot fun chewing the fat, arguing over the price of each set of tires I would buy. Barb and family....My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. I will always remember my conversations with Mike, from Fred's Tires, morning coffee at McDonald's, the faculty room and from the "Gator". He always had an opinion for me on just about everything from sports to politics. Surprisingly we often agreed!
Mike does leave a legacy at Rochester and will always be remembered as a true "Warrior"!

Barb, rain or shine, whenever we saw someone on the move in the school district it was Mike on his machine; prepping the grounds and always willing to stop and visit. Our memory of Mike goes back to his Fred's Discount Tires days. It was a pleasure to know him and he was a great person to fish with. He now has a golden fishing rod and has returned to the greatest fishing hole ever with our Savior (probably giving him some fishing tips). Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God Bless.

Our nick name for Mike was, "Lawn Mower Mike". Last year we would watch from the classroom window and make bets on what MPH he was going on the lawn mower. We even saw a few 2 wheeler corners, and say to each other,"That's a talent!" He was our fixture!
Mike always had a smile on his face and would greet everyone. He was out-going and always with his buddy (co-worker) Larry.
Some times we take forgranted the simple things in life that God has blessed us with. And we forget what a simple smile, or a "Hello!" might mean to someone we run into everyday. How it might brighten a gloomy day. Mike was that for me, I will miss his smile and ,"Hello!"
Barb, we love you and are praying for you and your family.
May God give you peace and rest as you go through this time of grief.

Mike - I first met him years ago, I lived up by White Pass and would come to get tires at Fred's. I thought Mike was a little rough around the edges and grouchy. But as time went by and I later moved to Rochester, I realized that Mike was a big teddy bear. He had his way of communicating and even though he did not have a lot to say - I knew he cared about me and my family. Mike will be really missed in our community. Barb - I am very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts are with you.

Mike and I spoke atleast once daily out around the fields. Mike's nature allowed for a multitude of conversations be it home, work, government or sports both field and stream. Mike and I shared many interests and I found that if I didn't have an opinion on a subject that Mike would give me his without me even asking. I enjoyed Mike and our fishing/hunting comparisons and the discussons as to why everything is so screwed up. Mike will be missed. He was a truly good person with a kind heart and was the kind of guy that might not give you the shirt off his back, but would see to it that your back was covered.

I will think of Mike often- daily, in fact, when I look at my two "guys" that he spoiled rotten by feeding them human food and parts of his own snacks. I honestly thought Mike would use them for fish bait, but he really showed his soft side in dog sitting Mickey and Molly.
He will be SO missed. Barb and family, you're in our prayers.
