Laurette:
You might call this a 40+ year-old love letter from someone you don't remember. We were classmates back at MTSH, graduating in 1971. I was the typical awkward teenager who didn't know how to talk to girls, but I always thought you were the prettiest girl in the whole school. I'm glad that you found someone special and now sad for you that he died some years back. I always hoped you'd be happy, and now I know. I'm happily married myself, but I'll never forget my first crush. God bless.

Our condolences to Jim's family. Emails were sent out to classmates of Jim's passing. Many sending remembrances of school years and at reunions he attended. This web site was sent out to classmates too. Another sad note for our class is the loss of Karen Staben Rice who died suddenly on July 24 2007.

I have always admired, enjoyed and respected Jim. I worked with Jim in Black Hills district for several years and on several wildfires. Jim was respectful of others, hardworking, thoughtful, and a pleasure to be around. Jim was a good forester who made a positive and a lasting impact to this community through thoughtful land management and generating tens of millions of dollars for all of the citizens of Washington State. Jim was a softspoken Norwegian, letting his actions and personal values speak louder than his words. As I gaze upon Capitol Forest I will miss Jim, but I will always remember his warm smile and his positive contributions.

Dear Lorette and family, I am very sorry and share your sadness at Jim's passing. Jim was a quiet, calm gentle person who's strength and kindness I will be miss. We enjoyed having Jim as our neighbor and much appreciated his help with the tractor and conversations on the driveway. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help out. I will come down for a visit once things have calmed down. Take care, Best wishes, your neighbors, Suzanne, Pat and Claire Powers

My deepest condalences. Although, I only new Jim for a short time at DNR, I was touched my his kindness and gentle spirit. He even taught me how to harvest frozen sap from a tree. He had a true love for the outdoors, which was infectious to those around him.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I was a co-worker of Jim's but mostly he was my friend. He taught me about more than a few of life's lessons including patience, integrity, loyalty and hard work to name a few. Jim always kept a band aid in his wallet and when I needed to get patched up in the woods once, he hooked me up. I've had one handy ever since thanks to Jim. I will miss him. My condolences to Laurette and the kids.

I had the pleasure of working with Jim while dealing with timber sales. He was a very patient, quite individual who always tried to be fair in difficult situations. He was a great person to have met and I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with him. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family members, as this has to be a very difficult time. You hav alot of friends out here that will give you the strength to live on. Barb..

Uncle Jim had one of the kindest souls that I have ever known. He was so giving and loving and he never had a negative thing to say. When my brother Danny was struggling with mental illness, Jim was there for him...helping him cope with his sickness and keeping him focused on the Lord ( I know that my brother looked forward to uncle Jim visiting). Jim was always so good about driving up to see Grandma on the farm as often as he could - that meant so much to her. There are so many wonderful memories of holidays together at grandma's, and camping at Lake Riley - there isn't room for them all. One of my favorite memories is camping at Riley and watching Jim with his grandchildren - in many ways he reminded me of my grandpa and you could see the enormous amount of love they had for eachother. I will miss his gentle nature, loving ways and his warm smile. The legacy that he leaves behind is amazing and we are blessed to have his family to love. All my love to Laurette, Jennifer, Kristy, Marsha, Aaron and their families. You are in my thoughts and prayers constantly.
Love, Susie

We will all fondly remember Jim as a happy, nice, quiet man with a great smile. I think I will always think of him as "Papa Jim" because that is what my kids called him too. . . Justin and Julia's Papa Jim. :o) How blessed you all were to have him in your lives and I know he will be greatly missed. We are thinking of you all and hope you know you can call on us for anything, anytime. Love,
Raquel, Shon & Girls.
