Our condolences go to Ed’s wife Gerry and his family. Having known Ed for many years, it was always great to run into him because he was always smiling and never had a bad word to say. Even though I would not see him for years at a time, he was the same ole Ed. He will be missed. Our prayers are with the family.

Oh grandpa, you will be so very missed by your family and friends. I’m so thankful for all of the precious memories shared with you and life lessons you taught all of us grandkids. You had a unique and special relationship with each of us. We couldn’t have been more blessed. I just keep reminding myself it’s not a “goodbye”, it’s an “I’ll see you later”. We will see you soon, grandpa.
I love you to the moon and back!
Love, your Katiebug.

Ed and I met in second grade in Miss DeLatour’s class in Lacey Grade School and we graduated together from North Thurston High School in 1963. My memories of him are mostly from grade school because we never had a class together in high school. But, I always remembered him as being sweet, kind, and with a ready smile. So, it was with much surprise when I answered my phone early on October 17th and it was him on the line. I said, “Oh hi Ed. How are you?” And, he said that he had cancer and was in Mother Joseph’s Care Center. His response brought immediate tears to my eyes. He said he called me because he was hoping I could let other classmates know that he was ill and would love a visit. I went to see him that afternoon and when we hugged it felt like I was hugging my 7-year-old friend “Eddie.” His smile was ethereal! Our visit was brief because he had to have a radiation treatment, but after returning home I got the word out to our school friends like he wanted, and I know that he received visits from several classmates after that. It was my intention to visit him again – but it was not to be. I know that he had been an Olympia Police Officer for many years and served his community and its residents well. I feel so humbled that I was a classmate he trusted to call with his difficult news. My heart goes out to all his loved ones and friends. May you be comforted in the knowledge that he is now in heaven with his Lord and Savior. Bless your soul Eddie! You were always one of the “good ones.” Love to you and yours! Sally Bowker Hicks

What a loss for all his family and friends. Ed Kunkel was one of those men who quietly went about his love of family, working with people during his time with Olympia P.D. keeping in touch with some of the people he graduated with. Ed seemed to have a smile on his face most of the time.
He was a Christian man and his faith was wonderful to see in him his whole life. I never passed his family home just off the I-5 that I didn’t think of him and say a little prayer for his safety on the job. I know he enjoyed the taking care of people’s needs and trying to make an accident etc. not so difficult.
Our class of ’63 was important to Ed and he joined a lot of us at breakfast once a month for years. Never, ever did I hear him complain about anything, just a ready smile and a soft spoken word. We were so lucky to be a part of his life.
I know the most important things in his life were his wife and family. My husband and I visited Ed in Mother Josephs and he was so positive. I am so thankful that we were able to say a prayer with him and see his smiling face and are able to remember him in such a positive way.
I will never forget him.
