I was thinking about you tonight, and then got an email from Schella. She was remembering, too. It's tough, being without you. We had a terrible disaster in the Gulf. A pipeline broke in a deep oil well and it's been spewing oil into the Gulf for weeks. I think today they may have it fixed though. They put a lot of junk in to plug the hole and are going to pour concrete over that. I keep busy writing. Grace is staying all the time with Brian, who is at Schella's so Schella has Grace all the time, which they both love. Clyde-man thrives, as does my Keena. Love you forever.

I'm thinking of you this week, and that you would be 54. And Tim will be 55. You could laugh and call him an old man. I have your picture in my living room and it comforts me. Somehow I know you are all right, that you always would be. I dedicated a book to you, which you probably already knew. The one you always asked about, with the 13th century musician, is finally going to be published. I remember you asked me about it whenever you called, even remembering what it was about, so I know you cared. All of us are doing well. I sometimes miss you so much but when I start crying I hear you telling me it's okay and then I feel better. I was blessed to have such a son. I love you Bern. Mom
P.S. Clyde is doing great. They call him Clyde-Man.

Bern: I forgot to tell you. Carol and Clyde fell in love. She wouldn't let me have your dog back after bringing him back from Tumwater. He loves to ride in her RV and she takes him everywhere she goes in the car, too. He sleeps with her and she helps every night lifting his rear end up to get in bed cause his backers aren't the best. They are both inseperable and I knew you'd want her to have him cause you thought so much of her. She says he's the best dog she ever owned. So some of you must have rubbed off on Clyde.

It's been almost a year now since I lost you. I couldn't come here before, and even now the tears are flowing. I can hear you saying, "Aw, Mom, it's alright. Don't cry." I've heard you other times too. I've heard you laugh -- I'll never forget your laugh. I feel like I had you so short a time, but you got wings a long time ago. You flew through life like a big eagle. One of your friends said that you were too good for this world. I'm convinced of that. You lived a life like few men do. You had no enemies, and no one ever thought anything but good about you. I remember you telling me you didn't have room for bad thoughts; they crowded out the good ones. What a philosophy to live by. I see you on a ladder fixing Schella's house, I see you standing on the deck of your boat cooking a steak for Karen while you eat sushi. I see you aiming your bow, showing me how it works. I see you in the mountains and soaring in the sky. You're around me still, and I love you for what you are and for what you taught me. You went confidently in the direction of your dreams, and lived the life you imagined. Thoreau said men should do that, and few men do, but you did. You dreamed, and said "Why not?" You have my love, Bern ,and I know I have yours. I think of you every day. Thank you for being such a good son, and for being my angel.

Dear Schella:
Sheila and I, of course, have been so shocked and upset about Bernie passing away, because we know how much you loved him and how much he meant to you. So although we didn't get to know him, we enjoyed hearing about him, and in a way loved him too.
We do know he was a lucky guy, because he had you for a sister, and I'm sure he loved you very very much too.
Love Ray and Sheila

Bye uncle Bern, see you again one day, I hope. Say hi to Grandpa for me, at least now he has someone to go fishing with. Thank's for teaching me to flyfish, bowhunt, wrestle bears, track and stalk wild women... err I mean animals!! and everything else my mother dosent need to know about! You gave me insight into places beyond Columbiana. Your tales and inspiration have been with me on many adventures since leaving Alabama, I will appreciate and pass on the knowledge you have bestowed. Enjoy your afterlife Great Northwest Man.

Hey Bernie,
I miss you so much already, can't imagine not getting those calls from you - rubbing in the fact that you were RETIRED and living Large in the Great Northwest - panning for gold, fishing for salmon, or just hangin out brewing the best beer in town! I was so blessed to have you in my life, you were a beautiful person who would have given anyone the shirt off your back to help them - I only hope that I can take some of what you taught me and pass it on. You were a GREAT BROTHER and Friend! I too wish the world was full of Bernies! Tell Dad and everyone else over there I love them. Sweet Dreams....

Bernie my dear
I found your semi truck license plate and am giving it to Shella. I included a copy in your memorial. I included a copy of the picture I took of you on one of our hiking trips. Bernie there were so many trips I wanted to take with you. I loved hiking with you and will miss our fun times so much. You were going to take your aunt sailing. After visiting Alaska, she is going to stop in Olympia to pick up KiKi and take him to your mom in Florida. I wish you had taken me to meet your family in Florida. You should have visited them far more often.
You were such a wonderful man. I have so many fond memories of happy times together. A person as fortunate as myself, is so lucky to meet just one Bernie in a lifetime. You are the kindest person I have ever met.. I am so fortunate to have had you come into my life. I will love you always. It hurts so much to be without you. Words cannot describe the void. I learned so much from you about life.
