Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how much Mr Mac influenced my life. He was a great motivator, humorous and sincere. I'll never forget my 8th grade year at Chinook when he convinced a number of us baseball players to turn out for track in the spring and become 'track rats'. I don't think Mr Herness (the baseball coach)was that amused with it ,but boy we had fun.
I had the pleasure of playing football for him in middle school and high school. He always made sure that having fun fun was #1. He always had nicknames for us. In practice If you were on the JV team he coached scrimmaging the varsity in our green vests we were his 'green weanies'. He made us feel like the Green Bay Packers and we thought he was 'Vince'. My best thought of Mr Mac is when my playing days were over and I was 'just' a student in his math class. He still had that connection in the classroom obvious that he cared about you and your well being, the direction in life you were headed and making sure you had fun in all you do. God Bless and thanks for the memories.

He was a funny, sweet, bigger-than-life man who makes me smile just thinking about him. I'm so sorry for your family's loss. Thank you for sharing him with us all.

Mr. McDonald was a brave man to deal with me as an obnoxious teenager who was also horrible at math! A few years after I graduated, I ran into him and apologized for him having to deal with me. He laughed and said "Well, I don't know that we got a lot of math done but we sure had a lot of fun!" That we did.

North Thurston Class 69 & 71 We are so saddened to hear that you lost Mr. Mac.He was a great teacher & even greater human being. I will never forget how touched I was at seeing him, one of my favorite teachers at our wedding 37 years ago. He gave us avocado green towels;) See...I can still remember because it was such a touching & encouraging gesture to two very young newlyweds. We were so happy to run into him years later when our son was involved in local theater. He had the same energy & enthusiasm we remembered from our youth. It makes me sad to know that he's gone on, but also comforting to know he will be on the other side when we get there. Thanks Mr. Mac & we wish you & your beloved ones peace. You made this planet a better place.

To the McDonald family; i am so sorry for your loss. Your husband/father/grandpa,etc. was such a great person. He was the teacher that made a difference in my life. He not only taught me about numbers, but also about some life lessons that I have carried with me always. 13 years ago, I moved into the neighborhood Dennis lived in. I had the pleasure of visiting with him several times over the years. A few years ago, I went back to school and had a conversation with him about how apprehensive I was about an algebra class I was enrolled in because math never was my strong suit. He told me to believe in myself and I could accomplish anything I wanted. To my amazement, I got an A in the class and saw him sometime after I had completed the course. I thanked him for his words of encouragement, and he said (with a smile and a wink), "Just think of what you could have done if you had actually paid attention in my class!"
I will miss him tremendously, although I feel extremely fortunate that I did live so close to him and was able to visit with him over the past several years.

I thought about writing to you and letting you know what Mr. Mac meant to me as a student at Chinook Jr. High and my utter excitement at seeing him in nearly every Abbey Players performance many years later but it is hard to find the words to describe this truly wonderful human being. He was eloquent, hilarious, subtle, endearing, and every kids advocate. Everyone who came in contact with him was touched by the life he led and the love and support he shared with others. You've done us all proud Mr. Mac and God is proud also that you are one of His own.
Peace and Prayers to all of you...

Cathy McDonald and Family,
I was very sadden to hear of Dennis's death. My prayers and sympathy are with you all.
Dennis was a VERY special friend of mine through our high school years. We spent almost every weekend Friday or Saturday going to a movie or sock dance. At times we had seen every movie playing in Seattle and Dennis hardly ever missed a football or basketball game at Bellevue High when I was playing.
Since his passing I have been remembering him and the special days we shared - he was a very special person that contributed significantly to my life by knowing and sharing times together.
My thoughts are with you and I share your loss but the special memories live on forever.

I had not seen Dennis for sometime and was sad to hear of his passing. At lunch last week John Birbeck and I were discussing the many stories about Dennis and everything he did for the community. I will remember Dennis from the famous Conconully Massacre fishing trips we all took over to Eastern Washington. What great fun with such great friends. As John put it "What happened at Conconully stayed at Conconully." We both laughed as I'm sure Dennis would have. Dennis was truly a Man for all seasons. I shall miss him!!

I first met coach "Mac" the summer before I started high school at football camp. I am very lucky to have continued my football career with him as my coach, but the best of times 3where when he tricked me into being a part of the abbey theatre groups production of 'bye, bye Birdie'. Coach had sent game tape of my punt snapping abilities to many schools, most from which I received letters of interest from and even a letter of interest signed by U of I's Dennis Erickson to play for the Vandal's. All coach Mac said was that I owed hm one, and I foolishly said 'whatever you need coach'. Well come spring time I was asked by coach to help out with the Abbey Players spring production. I of course thought he meant help with the sets or something similar, was I ever wrong. He wanted me to be part of the cast of teenage boys, of which he currently only had two. I wasn't thrilled with the prospect, but also had a long tie to Abbey through my dad's involvement and couldn't let down coach 'Mac' or dad. I think that play turned out to be one of the best adventures of my high school life and will never forget the man who held me to my promise. He will be missed.

Dennis was a great man and it is plain to see that he really made a difference in other peoples lives, in a variety of ways (teacher, coach, mentor, friend, thespian,...). We enjoyed talking with him over the years and listening to the stories that result when someone has had a fulfilling, adventurous life. We could also see that he excelled in the family side of things as well (husband, father, grandfather) as evidenced by the love and attention that he gave to Sean, Jody, Amy and Hannah. Our heart-felt condolences to Cathy and the rest of the McDonald family. Dennis is gone but not forgotten.

To the family of coach Mac, my deepest sympathy. When my mom told me the news earlier this week, it made me stop and think about what a great man he was. Though I never had any of his classed, I was coached by him in football, and he was alway a great inspiration during my basketball years. I sit here, the past few days and just laugh at some of the things he said and did over the years. He will be missed tremendously in the community.
