To the Martin children:
I read with sorrow the obituary for your father. He was a very special man. When Tom McPhee and I decided we would step out of the security building and move our practice to a new location, my partner left all the design work to me. We had a limited budget, but I wanted to have something that looked professional and would last (at least long enough to pay off the bank loans we took out). With the guidance of Gretchen Sturdevan (then Gretchen Baker) we tuned to Martin Furniture.
I designed a logo for the firm that I wanted to have constructed out of oak and stained to match the unique color of our furnishings and woodwork. The receptionist sent me directly to your father, which was the first time I met him. He was very gracious. In a diplomatic way he let me know that I could not afford to do what I wanted to have done. Instead of sending me off, he invited me to come back on a weekend. He told me he would help me create what I was seeking. I took him up on his invitation. He directly handled the aspects of the project that took skill. The balance he left for me to do after providing instructions that even with my limited capabilities were easy to follow. He refused to accept any money for his time and thanked me for the furniture that I had purchased. Considering the nature and extent of the commercial work that Martin Furniture was doing at the time, I was confident that what I had spent for our furnishings would not have covered an hour of G.D. Martin Company’s shop time. In the years that followed, if a client ever asked about the furnishings I told them about Martin Furniture and assured them it was simply the best. It was quality furniture produced by quality people.
Three decades later I still have much of the furniture. Although it has been refinished and re-upholstered, it still adds a contemporary setting to the two conference rooms that are highlighted by the pieces. Like the furniture, my fond memories of your father, his humor, and his kindness seem to last forever.

Artie, Dan, Georgia Rae and family:
We just received word of Jack's passing. Condolences to all of you at this most difficult time. We are so sorry to miss the celebration of his life as we are still in AZ. You know that Jack was very special to us....a most delightful, fun loving person and a real gentleman. We so missed him when our "boathouse neighbor" moved on down the line. Nobody next door to hassle about the noisy, wonderful music that was heard when he was next door working. We are so fortunate to have had the opportunity to have Jack pass through our journey of life. He is one who has left us with most fond memories. Larry and Colleen Price

Carole and I would like to offer our sincere condolences at the passing of Jack, we are sorry we were out of town and not able to attend his celebration of life. Though we have not seen Jack for a while; we have our very fond memories of a true gentalman and friend. I feel priviliged to have been Commadore the year we celebrated Jacks 50th year as a member of OYC and gave him the plaque recogonizing his years and contrubutions. I remember working with Jack and the committee when we were considering the plan for possable acquisition of West Bay; his experience and history of OYC and community knowledge was priceless.
We will all miss Jack and realize his positive contribution and infuence on all who had the privilige to know him.
Sincerely,
Richard & Carole Erwin

So sorry we can't be with you today. Both Tony and Isobel have fond memories of times spent with your dear Dad. Tony's first memory of Jack was when he, Jack Ruhl and your Dad built a small pre-fab house down in Westport. He said he learned so much about building from "the Jacks". Over the years, Jack has always been a gentleman and so enjoyable to be around. Our hearts are with you today.

We have fond memories of travelling to Olympia's sister city, Yashiro, Japan, with Jack and Arte in 1998. We live on Sylvester Street, two doors down from the house Jack grew up in, and we enjoyed hearing him tell us stories of him being afraid of the "old lady" who lived in the house we now own because she yelled at him and his friends when they hit baseballs in her yard. We also enjoyed boating with Jack and Arte on Foofaraw, the OYC and Chamber military appreciation day out to Island Home. Jack was a generous gentleman and will be missed.

I am saddened to hear of your loss. I worked for Jack for eleven years until he sold the business. He gave me an opportunity in a time in my life of great need. He was truly somebody that would give you the shirt off his back. He was a mentor and a friend.
He will truly be missed. My deepest sympathy to Artyce, Danny and family.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Jack's passing. I had the good fortune of working with Jack on two different fronts, if you will. One was with Lakefair. The other was working with Jack on furnishings for the Washington State Legislature. In both instances, Jack was very creative and very helpful. Throughout the years, I could always count on Jack to be there when he was needed, no matter what. If I never saw Jack anywhere else during the year; I could count on seeing him meeting and greeting his friends during Lakefair at the food concessions.
Jack was a kind, thoughtful, generous and considerate man and will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to Artyce, Danny, and the rest of the Martin family during this difficult time.

I am deeply saddened learning of Jack's passing. Jack and I have been acquainted for all the 47 years we have lived in Olympia. Jack and I were members in the downtown Olympia Rotary Club and remained together in Rotary with the chartering of the Westside Rotary Club in 1975. He was a fine gentleman. May he rest in peace.

Thanks Jack for giving me a chance to work for you. I had to keep comming back in my suit and tie til you told me to come back Monday morning ready to go to work. After some 5 years from all I learned from you I went to work for the State of Wa. and 30 years later retired from Managing a furniture factory in a state prison. I had a lot of fun and have a lot of memories from G. D. Martin Furniture. So, all I can say is "Thanks Jack". (ps. see ya later !!)

My heart is sadden over the loss of your father. I started working for Jack when I was 20 years old and spent the next 17 years working for him. I can not only say that he was my boss, but more important my friend. I enjoyed working for him. I often think of that part of my life and the great times we had. Danny, remember all the times he got mad at us and the fun we use to have over the years. Most employers would have ran us off the property the first day. I have the greatest respect for that man. Jack made a family out of his employees, that is why he kept the same people working for him for many years. I am at a loss of words but you children know how I felt about your dad. God Bless
