Obituary of William R. Luhr

William Reynold Luhr, 76, passed away in his Olympia home on July 13th 2010. He was born in Tacoma in 1934. The Luhr family owned and operated a boat rental service at Luhr Beach in Olympia. Bill grew up duck hunting and fishing on the Nisqually flats, gaining the nickname of “Tideflats.” He graduated from Olympia High School and went on to serve with the Army during the Korean War. He worked in various places as a boilermaker, frequently with Reliable Welding. In March 1976 he married Patricia Marie Schroder. They made their home in Olympia at Beachcrest. After he retired, he dedicated his time to caring for his family.Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He earned a Master Hunter’s certificate from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. He was widely known as a local authority on boats and fishing. He was a wonderful story-teller, always sharing memories of his experiences growing up in Olympia and the many hunting and fishing trips he had taken with family and friends. He will be sorely missed for his humor, generosity and thoughtfulness. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, son Will, daughter Lisa, sister Maxine Short, mother-in-law Dorothy Schroder and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents William Clarence and Gladys Luhr. Donations in his name may be made to the Nisqually Reach Nature Center, a non-profit organization located at Luhr Beach which provides wildlife education to the students of our community.
