Obituary of Donald Lee Long

none Donald Lee Long June 7, 1922 ~ March 17, 2004 We lost our beloved on March 17, 2004 when he died peacefully in his sleep. He was born June 7, 1922 to Henry and Maebelle (Lee) Long in Shelton and lived on the West side of Olympia all his life. His grandparents were Washington Territory pioneers, arriving in 1865. He was a descendant of General Robert E. Lee. Don graduated from Olympia High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served in World War II as a Carpenter's Mate 1st Class. On July 6, 1946 he married Margaret Berschauer, who survives. Together, they had four children; sons, Thomas (Mary), of Pendleton, Oregon, and Robert (Pam); and daughters, Donna (David) Johnson and Suzanne, of Olympia. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Roy. In addition to his wife and children, he is also survived by granddaughters, Shannon Carpenter, of New York, Marcie Duffy, of Centralia, and Jodi Penton, of Chicago; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; a brother, Henry A. Long (Beverly); and a sister-in-law, Beatrice Bodette. Don and Margaret would have celebrated 58 years of marriage on July 6th. He retired from the Olympia Brewery in 1984. He cherished his family, as they did him. Don especially enjoyed working with his dad at the H. A. Long Boatworks. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 1:00 pm at the Masonic Center, 521 North Street, S.E., Tumwater.
