Shirlee was a neighbor and good friend during my teen age years in Seattle when I babysat her daughter, Julie. I remember Shirlee for her cheerfulness, intelligence and compassion. She is missed.

I'm a parent at the Lacey Elementary TAG. I am very saddened by Shirlee's death. I did not know Shirlee personally but always felt and knew of her great concern about each child's welfare in the TAG program which made me feel that my child was not only being nourished academically but that he was in a safe learning environment. I will miss her leadership as I knew I could always call or email her and was sure to get a prompt loving response. I know her family misses her even more deeply. My heart-felt condolenses go to you all. Fanny Nyaribo-Roberts.

I knew Shirlee when she worked at Children's Psychiataric Hospital at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor in the late 1960's. Going through an old address book today, I happened upon her name and when I looked her up found out that she had only recently passed away. Shirlee was a lover of life and her passion for and devotion to children was always clearly evident . She was surely one of the "most fun" people I ever knew. My condolences to her family and friends. Adrienne Ressler

I am deeply saddened by the loss of one of the most amazing women I have ever met. I knew Shirlee from working with her on the Gifted Advisory Council and from working for her as one of the first Home Visitors in the North Thurston School District. She was one of the most caring, sincere, open-minded, compassionate, and strongest people on this earth. She always found the good in every one and in every situation. She will always be my strongest role model. She helped so many children and adults alike to become the best they could be. I hope Shirlees family knows what a gift she was to all of us. I will never forget her or her contagious laughter. Shirlee will be sorely missed and I will forever honor her in memory. Heaven just became an even better place.

Thank all of you for sharing Shirlee with us. We had far too little of her time but that time made such a huge impact on us. Julie, we got to know your mom because of you so you are special to us. St. Mike's set the tone and our lives have been full. Thank you all. Our love and prayers will always be with you.

To Shirlee's family, I met Shirlee when my oldest daughter was lucky to be enrolled in the "self-contained" gifted program at Pleasant Glade Elementary. Thanks to her, my children and many others could find true friendship and acceptance. I know that the many children she has helped will never forget her. A life well lived indeed.

Shirlee changed my son's life. He attended a Christian elementary school through Grade 6 and received straight A's. When he transferred to public middle school, his attitude soured and his grades plummeted. Shirlee checked his entrance exams scores and simply said, "Your son is gifted - he is at the wrong school." She placed him at Nisqually in the honors program where he earned straight A's. He graduated from RRHS in 2006 where he took 13 AP classes and passed them all and kept his 4.0 GPA. He now attends the UW Honors Program with Junior status where he maintains that 4.0 GPA. Thank you, Shirlee, for changing my son's life forever. May God bless you now with all you deserve for all you have done for countless children. May your family know that you are home, in peace, at last.

Thank you, Shirlee, for all your life lessons. You were the consumate teacher in countless ways. So many of us feel such a loss just now. In time, the loss will subside and we will carry forth with a smile in our hearts. We will pause now and then and remember how fortunate we have been in knowing you - how your great zest for living will continue to affect our own lives. That is your legacy.
To the family, I offer sincere condolences. Blessings and peace to all of you .

A message to Shirlee's dear family, especially Julie---
I first met Shirlee when she came to Lacey Elementary School as our Special Ed Teacher. I was teaching 4th grade at that time. We seemed to "click", of course as did everyone who met, knew and worked with her. Her great personality and love of children gave us much in common. She worked hard for success for her students, she participated in school functions and assisted all of us with our teaching of "her" students. It was a delightful, collaborative working relationship.
As she, and I, went on to different responsibilities we would meet and she always remembered my name, my interests and we resumed our interrupted conversations.
I never knew her outside the school setting, though it would have been fun.
You all were luckier in that regard than I have been.
My condolences on your loss, but you must have many great memories to sustain you.
Barbara

Shirlee had been someone with whom I had interacted with professionally--talking about services for highly capable students and participating in discussions about forming a reading foundation for Thurston and Mason counties. Her desire to provide quality services for kids was genuine and tenacious, and she was most gracious in helping others with those same goals. I held much respect and appreciation for Shirlee and for her work on behalf of kids. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched!

We were saddened to read of Shirlee's passing in yesterday's newpaper. Our two children were in the PACE, TAG and Chinook Challenge Academy programs since 1997. Shirlee always kept track of their academic progress and showed personal interest in all their successes. These programs would never have existed without Shirlee's vision, determination and endless hard work. With the learning opportunities she created, she has made a difference that will affect many, many children for the rest of their lives. Our sincere condolences to Julie and the rest of Shirlee's family.

We were saddened to read Shirlee's obituary this morning. She was a bright spot in everyone's life. Whenever I had questions about reading programs she generously helped. Her smile was welcoming and uplifting.
We have a sense of loss because Shirlee is no longer with us.
Our hearts go out to you.
