Obituary of John Byron Kelly

John Byron “Barney” Kelly, died Monday, April 18, 2005 in Lacey, Washington from complications from a broken hip. He was born September 30, 1910 in Kent, Washington and raised in Brinnon & Quilicene, Washington. He went through 9th grade. He married Maxine Vivian Farm on February 15, 1953, she preceded him in death. He lived in Shelton, Washington from 1953 to 1975 and Olympia from 1975 until his death at 94. He was proud to be a charter signer for the Simpson’s Federal Community Credit Union. He was stationed in the Pacific during WWII with the Navy as a CB. He retired from Simpson’s Timber Company in 1971, worked at both Camp Govey and Camp Grisdale as a logger. He was a member of the Quilicene Masonic Lodge and had earned his 50 year pin. During the fifties he along with his wife ran Kelly’s Turkey Farm, a commercial turkey and chicken farm, from their home near Lake Isabel outside of Shelton. After the turkeys they raised beef cows and sold hay. During the fifties and sixties he always planted and cared for a large garden. He enjoyed coming home after work and working in the garden or during the summer going out blackberry picking after dinner. After retiring, he ran an antique shop (Once Upon a Time) with his wife, after her death he continued selling the antiques at various antique shows where he enjoyed the interaction with people that the antique show offered. He enjoyed talking about the old days of Shelton, Hood Canal and the logging industry. He also enjoyed a good political discussion. He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Kelly Ruddell of Rochester, WA; step-son, Larry E. Ballard of Greenbrea, CA.; step-daughters, Jerry L. Ballard Eddy of Tumwater, WA. and Lovette R. Ballard Farler of Lacey, Wa.; 25 Grandchildren and Great grand children; Sisters, Marian Kelly Schauer of Sequim, WA. and Jean Kelly Phillips of Brinnon, WA. There will be a graveside service Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 12:30 p.m. at Masonic Memorial Park.
