Obituary of Joseph Kaleiwahea

Joseph “Joe” F. Kaleiwahea Joseph “Joe” Kaleiwahea, 82, of Lacey, died September 26, 2008. He was born September 18, 1926 in Waipahu, Hawaii to Benjamin and Minnie (Souza) Kaleiwahea. On July 11, 1996, he married Judith Ferrell in Kauai, Hawaii. Joe served for 21 ½ years in the United States Army serving in France, Germany, and the Congo. After retiring from the Army he obtained his barbers license, which he still held, working in Puyallup and then owned his own shop in Mossyrock. He also worked for Tacoma City Light, retiring after 16 years. Following retirement, he fished for 30 days straight. He enjoyed trips to Reno and the local casinos. He also loved to visit his beloved Hawaii. He was a member of the Honolulu Eagles, Robert Morris Lodge #97 F&AM in Silver Creek, the Olympia Moose Lodge, and VFW Post #5439. In addition to his wife, Judith, Joe is survived by three sons, Joe, Jr. (Bridgette) of Browns Mill, New Jersey, Larry (Rhonda) of Everett, and Russell (Mechele) of Lacey; two daughters, Leilani of Puyallup and Wendy (Ed) Troyer of Tacoma.; sister, Linda (Steve) Richard of Arlington; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Kaleiwahea of Ewa Beach, Hawaii and Violet Kaleiwahea of Honolulu, Hawaii; Joe is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren with one due in November; also his step-children, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by brothers, Stanley, Edmund, and Jimmie; and sisters, Muriel Aspera and Rachell Krilla. His family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Providence St. Peter Hospital and Mother Joseph Care Center for the compassion shown. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Masonic Center, 455 North St. SE, Tumwater. A reception will immediately follow services. Inurnment will take place in Mililani, Hawaii at a later date. Donations may be made in Joseph’s name to Mother Joseph Care Center, 3333 Ensign Rd NE, Olympia WA 98506
