Obituary of Frederick George Jensen

Frederick George Jensen Fred Jensen, 89, passed away April 1, 2011, in Olympia, Washington. He was born June 16, 1921, to Frederick and Sophie (Ketterer) Jensen in New York City, New York. Fred graduated from New York City’s James Madison High School in January of 1938, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Commercial Science degree from Seattle University in 1957 and in 1963 a Masters of Business Administration at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. Fred joined the United States Maritime Service February 5, 1938. He had a distinguished career in Maritime service having served on over sixty ships. During WWII Fred was called to serve as a Commander in the U.S. Army Transport Service until August of 1943. He was then called to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard until August of 1945 when he was reassigned to the Navy Transportation Service and ongoing Maritime service. He had a Master License with the designation of First Class Pilot of Steam and Motor Vessels of any gross tons. His responsibilities were wide ranging. Fred transported troops, tanks and artillery, horses, food and high risk shipments of aviation fuel (150,000 barrels) and shiploads of bombs (500 and 1000 pound). After his retirement, Fred was instrumental in establishing and serving as one of the first members of the Board of Directors of Holy Family School. He filed the first Articles of Incorporation and then served as the first principal of the school. He was a member of the St. Michael Parish. He was passionate and active in the pro-life movement. Fred is survived by brothers, Arthur Jensen of Westminster, MD, and Henry Jensen of Indiana. A funeral mass will be announced soon.
