Obituary of Ann Irene Hurd

Ann Irene Hurd, passed away November 11, 2005, surrounded by her family. Ann has resided in the Olympia and Lacey area since July 1976. Ann Irene Veres, was born on May 20, 1933, in Elek, Hungary. Ann’s family left Hungary in 1946 and were transported to West Germany. Her family was able to settle in the small city of Echterdingen, Germany. Ann’s education was completed at home by her sister, Veronika, who was an educator. Ann also studied culinary arts. In Hungary, Ann’s father Ladislaus Veres, was a professional soccer player in his youth, he later became a shoe cobbler. After arriving in Germany he became a brick mason, and her mother, Franziska, a homemaker. Ann worked in a yarn factory while she was completing her education. Afterward, she took employment in one of the world’s largest silk stocking factories. Ann met Jason L. Hurd on December 18, 1956, they were engaged on January 20, 1957, and married on June 5, 1957. Because Jason was in the military, their wedding was performed by German authorities and then later confirmed by the Catholic church. Ann and Jason made 13 moves in 19 years during his military career. Upon retirement, they returned to the Olympia area where Jason had begun his military service as an Army aviator. Ann and Jason have four children, which Ann raised mostly by herself as Jason was either in flight school or serving two tours in Vietnam. Ann’s favorite hobbies were needlepoint, baking, cooking, reading and gardening. Her needlepoint consisted of about 60 completed works of art, most of which were framed and hung. She took pride in her baking and cooking skills. Not only did she win awards for her baking, she also decorated cakes for charitable auctions. Her library held about four thousand books, which contained every subject, her favorite being history. Ann is survived by her husband Jason, four children, Ashley, Oliver, Vivian and Melvin. Ashley and his wife Donnis reside on Bainbridge Island, Oliver and his wife Stephanie of Lacey, Vivian and Mark of Lacey, Melvin and his wife Darla of Lacey. Ann has two granddaughters, Sonya and Vanessa Hurd. Ann still has relatives in Hungary and Germany.
