Obituary of Eugene E. Howard
Eugene E. Howard
Gene passed away peacefully at age 93. He was born in Washougal, Washington to Kathryn and Ed Howard, the fourth of five children. In the first grade, he tied his horse to the hitching post while in class. As an adult, he served three years in the Army Air-Force as an airplane mechanic near Pecos, Texas.
Gene returned to his farm in the Mt. Pleasant area where he spent most of his life as an outdoorsman: farming, logging, raising cattle and horses, fishing and hunting on horseback. He retired from the Skamania County road department as heavy equipment operator. After the death of Zola, his wife of 45 years, Gene enjoyed the warmth of Arizona for several years before returning to Washougal.
He lived the last six years of his life with daughter, Barbara Howard Anderson, in Lacey, Washington. He is also survived by daughter, Beverlee Gatherer (and Rod Jensen) of Glide, Oregon and her family; also by son Bill (and Rayma) Howard of Roseburg, Oregon and their children.
Gene requested cremation and his ashes have been placed in the Willamette National Veterans Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
Appreciation is expressed to his family and many friends who wrote, called, sent pictures, and kept in touch over the last few years – you kept him smiling.
