As students, my then wife Shannon and I rented the basement of Andy's and Jane's house on "B" street in Pullman and LOVED it! Andy and Jane were great people to know and associate with. At one point, I happened to be taking a 20th century art history class and Andy and I would talk 'Art" often. He'd often invite me upstairs to look at his "works in process" and Jane would share something she had baked. The best thing about that little basement apartment was the fact that each room had at least one "Hofmeister" hanging on the walls and every month Andy would swap them out with others from his collection. It was like a little museum with it's own rotating collection. Not to mention the scultpture in the back yard that started MANY conversations! God speed Andy and Jane, you will be missed, but never forgotten!

Andy and I met on Flathead Lake in Montana. My wife, Phyllis and I rented his lake house for a few years in the mid eighties. I loved this man. He encouraged me in my writing as we shared poetry and fiction. It is an honor to have know such a kind and generous soul. I look at the painting he gave us every day.

As a professor of mine at Washington State University, Andrew Hofmeister brought out the very best of my abilities: encouraging me to investigate realms and venue that would have otherwise gone misunderstood and untried. As a caring individual however, he accomplished so much more: keeping me in school, fulfilling my requirements and to this day, appreciating both my profession and my art to their utmost. Through his influence, I have found them to be inseparable. After thirty years I have retired to once again pick up the brush for my own pleasure and to encourage others. Perhaps a bit of his legacy lives on. I do hope so. I do regret not having stayed in touch with my professor all these years, though, and I do wish his family the very best.

I was sad to hear of your father's passing. We too often forget to thank the people who have had such an impact on our lives until they are gone. As a freshman, I took a design class from Mr. Hofmeister. It was the only "A" I earned that quarter! It was the first art class I had ever taken, and to this day, I am not sure why I added it to my schedule. But there must have been a guiding hand out there somewhere. I, too, received an MFA from WSU, became an instructor/dept. chair of the art department at Spokane Falls Community College. I retired after 38 years and continue to paint. I loved teaching Color and Design and would often talk about my first art instructor, Mr. Hofmeister who pushed, prodded and encouraged. Thank you for having such a special father. I know how much he loved your mother and family! Fondly, Jo Fyfe

Whenever I think of Andy and Jane, a smile lights up my face. I always called Andy my "Great" Uncle. We would laugh about how "Great" he really was.
I still wear the silver bracelet they gave me when I was a young girl from one of their travels to Europe.
In 1996, I had the honor to accept the Distinguished Alumni Award on his behalf at the University of Montana. I remember how proud I was to stand in front of a crowd and read the acceptance speech he had prepared. I can't recall everything he said, but I do remember he mentioned that very few people get to spend a lifetime doing what they love, and that he was one of the lucky ones that did. Our friendship will never be forgotten.

When I saw the obituary in the Billings Gazette, I knew I had to write. My great aunt Myrtle Olson Evinson was one of Andy's closest friends growing up in Vananda. They maintained a lifelong friendship through letters and phone calls up until her death September 2, 2002. Over the years Andy had given Myrtle several pieces of his art, and they were very dear to her. She requested that upon her death they be returned to Andy. When I contacted him about doing that, he recognized my name from his correspondence with Myrtle and asked if I was still teaching, which I was and am. He then told me to keep the pieces and enjoy them as a memory of my aunt. I hated to see such beautiful work not shared with others, so two of the pieces are now part of our high school art department, and the art teachers use them as part of their teaching. Knowing Andy's background as a teacher, I thought he would be pleased with that.
The three other pieces are framed and hanging in my home or my parents' home. Two of the pieces in particular have special meaning. We have a beautiful pencil sketch of Vananda as it was in its heyday, and a watercolor of a mother's horse, Brownie, that she rode as a child. For my mother, he captured and gave her vivid memories of her childhood. He has given me insight into my mother's childhood, and both are priceless gifts.
Andy's friendship, talent, and generosity have been a part of this family for many generations. He will be missed.

Uncle Andy used to tell me that being the first and only grandchild for several years made me "special". That love was always felt. Although we never had a lot of family times as we grandchildren grew up, as an adult,we were able to share some special times together. Especially when they traveled to and from the homestead in that old VW bus! I always looked forward to their next trip.
The year your dad suprised me with the painting of Grandma and Grandpa's old homestead ranchhouse, I knew I was still "special"
Only good memories remain of our family ties. Thank you for taking such good care of your mom and dad. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please keep in touch. Allen1205@imt.net

I met both Andy and Jane when they were neighbors of my parents on Flathead Lake in Montana. They both were so good to my parents and such good friends. They shared many wonderful times together on Flathead sharing stories, etc., as my parents were from Vida/Wolf Point area. My parents missed Jane and Andy so much when they moved to WA but stayed in contact through the years. My Dad died in 2002 and Mom in 2007. I then corresponded with both Jane and Andy for a few years. I have two paintings now hanging above my couch in the living room that Andy gave Mom and Dad...and copies of his many books as well as "Odyssey" telling his story in words and paintings. He was a wonderful man and left many wonderful memories. My condolences to the family of Andy Hofmeister. He will be missed and never forgotten.

I knew Mr. Hofmeister while he was a teacher at Beaverhead County High School in Dillon, Montana when I attended there in 1944-45. He did a pencil drawing of himself and gave it to me as my family and I were moving to Logan Utah.
My husband attended Washington State College 1954 to 1956, and I remember that a Mr. Andrew Hofmeister had an art exhibit on campus, but I had a small child at the time, and was unable to go. I wondered at the time if it was the same Andrew Hofmeister that I knew, and after reading his obituary that he lived in Pullman, Washington I now know that he was the same one I knew back in 1944-45 at BCHS, Dillon, Montana.
We extend our condolences to the family and want you to know we appreciated Mr. Hofmeister as a good teacher and friend.
If you would like a copy of the pencil drawing he gave me, please let me know at bpo7@juno.com
Best regards.

What interested me in the obituary was the fact Mr. Hofmeister had married Jane LaBrie in May of 1940 in Malta, Montana.
In talking with Andree Costoldi, I learned this was the same Jane LaBrie who had been my third grade teacher during the year, 1937-1938. I still have her picture in my photo album. I also have the report card which she had signed that year. It was a thrill for me to finally learn what had happened to my favorite grade school teacher.
It will me my pleasure meeting the daughter of this lovely lady, and I am sure, a very fine father.
