Till this day, I always chuckle as I quote from the huge banner that hung every day at the front of my classroom when I was in the 4th grade: "When all else fails, read the directions." My wise, young and enthusiastic 4th grade teacher at the Unqua School (Massapequa) in 1967-68, "Miss Cibeu" remains my absolute favorite among all the many great, creative & inspirational teachers I have had the privilege to know and learn from (including those during my years in graduate and law school). And not just because she took us for banana splits & hot fudge sundaes at Howard Johnsons's for winning the math contest or because my "script" handwriting looks remarkably like hers! Not knowing how to contact her after she left for Saudi Arabia, I regret never having been able to tell her what a difference she made. Indeed, even as a newly minted teacher, Miss Cibeu was someone who touched and inspired us. She will not be forgotten. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

I taught at McLane Elementary for just 6 months, and in that time I got to know Maria. She was always warm and understanding - a person I will not soon forget. Please accept my sincere sympathy as I know that your family will truly miss her.

Mrs. Harrison was the first principal I remember at McLane. She was so sweet; on your birthday, she would go to your classroom and give you a pencil on your birthday (and if she missed it for some reason, you would always get one). I loved her Wizard of Oz posters all around her office, and the stuffed dog named Toto she would carry around at the GRIN assemblies. I loved her; she was awesome and kind and forgiving...
Rest In Peace Maria Harrison.

Dear John and Family:
I am so sorry to hear about Maria's passing. My heart aches for you all. I am glad I had the chance to get to know Maria. She was a good friend and mentor. We often talked about our families, and it was clear how important you all were to her, and how much she loved you. She will be missed. I will remember her strength, courage, and love of family.
