Although we didn't see Jules during his fight with cancer, our thoughts and prayers were with him each day. He was so caring to me (Dion) when I had cancer, and I will always remember him for that and the smiles he created everywhere he went. Our deepest sympathies to the family and his extended "family of friends". RIP Dear Friend.

I just heard about the passing of Jules. Whenever I returned the Pacific Northwest on vacation, no trip was ever complete without visiting the Powder Keg and sharing a laugh with you. This world is now a sadder place now that you're no longer here. Those of us fortunate to have known you are much better people. Thank you for being a part of our lives.

While I’ve known Jules for over 25 years, I can’t say I knew him well. But one did not have to know Jules well to like him. I’m certain I speak for all his family, friends and casual acquaintances, when I say that he left this world with more smiles than when he entered.

Uncle Jules, as I type this I can hear your infectious laugh ringing in my ears. You were always the entertainer, always had the best jokes to tell. I have so many stories I could tell about you, a few really special ones lol like the time we were swimming together and you cut your leg open so bad, I almost passed out when you came up out of the water and how at mine and Ricks wedding you pulled me aside and hugged me and gave me money and told me not to tell anyone to make sure Rick and I had enough money for a nice dinner on our honeymoon night.I thought that was so sweet of you. I could go on and on. I got to hold you hand and tell you I loved you the night before you left this world, but I will say it again..love you uncle Jules you will be missed, but we will see you again. I've said this a million times in the last 10 months but I'll say it again. ALWAYS LOVED, NEVER FORGOTTEN

What a loss for us mere mortals. How much fun Lucky and Jules are having playing crib and thinking of jokes to play on each other in the heavens above. Jules was articulate, intelligent and had such an infectious smile and laugh for all of us. Thank-you, Sally, for sharing him so unselfishly so the rest of us could always know that no matter what, you left the Powder Keg happier and a little smarter from having visited and sparred with Jules. The world is better because he shared his many gifts and zest for life. The heavens are a better place because he will always be chuckling at his good fortune to have had you beside him, Sally, assuring him of his rightful place above. Much love, Robin & Bradley

We always enjoyed our "shop talks" and could always count on you to lend an ear and offer a valued opinon. I can still hear your lecherous laugh! We miss you bud!

Golf and your jokes will really be missed. Two stories---one, Jules still has the only hole in one on hole number four at Olympia Country Club. Two,-- years ago Jules and I were partners in a friendly golf game and Jules had a "typical" golf game for Jules. We lost quite handily, so when it was time to pay off our opponents, I told Jules he owed "so and so" six dollars, " so and so" six dollars, and YOU OWE ME AN APOLOGY!! On or off the golf course, we will miss Jules. One of a kind and a great guy!!!

Sally: Seeing Jules' announcement in Sunday's newspaper was such a shock. I wish I had known he was ill and suffering from cancer. I would have jumped at the opportunity to be HIS Hospice volunteer. That would've been an honor! I'm sure Jules was more worried about leaving YOU, then his illness. Jules was definitely a character and I always enjoyed my interactions with him. I have very fond memories of a weekend in Bellingham--the first time I met him. I recall him telling Dan and I all about YOU. I will always remember Jules as a great friend (especially to Dan) and how much he loved you. I'm so sorry for your loss. Love, Vanessa

Sally and Family,
We were so sorry to hear of such a tragic event. Jules was one of our favorite people especially when we often dined at the P.K. His sense of humor and friendliness always made it worthwhile to venture there. I also have many memories of playing golf with him and kidding with him about getting the Country Club in shape. He will be missed alot. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you during this most difficult time. God Bless, Bob and Linda Ward

Wow, where do I start... My love and prayers go out to Sally, Jeni, Harry, Flo and all family and friends. We have moved to Portland and I had no idea Jules was sick. I had stopped in before our move to say "see you later", I don't like saying goodbye, and he wished us the best of luck. I had some of the best times working at the PK, everyone really became family and I still consider them family even though I no longer work there. I miss how he used to always call me "buddy" and i miss his jokes and his laugh. I am glad I will be able to make it on the 11th and be there with the rest of the "fam" . Rest in peace "buddy" glad you are no longer in pain....

Hi all, this is Jules' wife, Sally. Thank you so far for your memories and condolences! My love to you all and I hope to see you Feb. 11th. KIM WALTERS: I'm so glad that you found out about Jules' passing. I was trying to remember your last name so I could figure out how to contact you in Morton. Jules and I had a great time at the 40th Morton HS reunion that year! I'm so glad you finally found him. Speaking of the geneology you sent us via email, I wonder if you might still have it, or could find it and resend to me. I printed it all out at that time, but during remodels or just moving stuff around in the house, I haven't been able to locate it!. Jules was corresponding w/his cousin Beverly in MT since last year and she told him that she's been working on the "Grele" geneology. I've searched high and low for it but so far, no luck. I thought for sure when our daughter, Jeni, was digging thru all of our photos for a DVD to be made, that she'd come across it, but again, we haven't found it yet. I hope you'll see this note. You can call me at my home #. If you don't have it, call the Powder Keg and tell them I said to give it to you please. Thanks, SG

I had the privilege of being Jules' fishing guide on his many Sitka fishing trips. What a blast. So many great laughs and memories over the years. Last summer while fishing in his favorite spot (The Shark Hole) killer whales came right up to the boat and ate one of the two King Salmon we were battling at the time. Jules got his in, the other was eaten! In my 20 years of guiding, this is one of my most exciting memories on the water. I will think of Jules everytime I fish the Shark Hole! RIP fishing buddy. Your humor and smile will be missed. Your one of a kind.

I got to know Jules from my sister Cheri Paine, and Bill Cleland. On visits to Washington from my home in California, we would often do a happy hour at the Keg with Jules entertaining us. A couple of years ago, I flew up on my birthday, had no plans, so my kids, sister, Bill and I went to celebrate with Jules. He made us laugh as always, and made my otherwise uneventful birthday a good one with fun pictures and happy memories. You will be missed Jules :-)
