Obituary of Sandra K. Green

None SANDRA KAY GREEN Sandra Kay Green, born December 7, 1943 to Wallace and Virginia Gwynn in Morehead, Minnestoa. Sandra passed away at home in the presence of her husband Bob on July 9, 2011. Sandra graduated from North Dakota University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, and from the University of Maryland in 1971, with a Masters Degree in Social Work. After graduation, Sandra dedicated herself to serving others working in social work positions for 34 years. Initially at Sister Kinney Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota and then with Tacoma-Pierce County Health. In 1979 Sandra became a Department of the Army Civilian social worker and found the love of her professional life caring for and providing services to Military members and their families. From 1980 to 1986 she was the Army Community Services Officer in Karlsruhe, Germany. During that time she developed and implemented innovative programs assisting families adjusting to Germany and Child Care Programs. In 1986 Sandy became one of the US Army’s initial AIDS/HIV Social Workers at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco, California. There she became known for her effective programs coordinating medical care and transition to civilian life assistance for her patients. From 1989 until her retirement in 2005 Sandra worked as an Intensive Care Social Worker at the Madigan Army Medical Center. Working with the staff at Madigan was the high light of Sandra’s professional life. Following retirement Sandra and Bob travelled, fished, and spent many hours in their garden. Sandra dedicated much of her retirement time to the Young Hero’s program at Madigan which each year recognizes children and their families who have experienced difficult medical challenges. The family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful care Sandra received from the Department of Oncology, Madigan Army Medical Center, end-of-life care provided by Providence Sound Home Hospice. Sandra was preceded in death by her mother Virginia; she is survived by her father Wallace Gwynn, Fargo, North Dakota, Sister Judith, Sacramento, California, and husband Lieutenant Colonel Robert Green, US Army retired of Olympia, WA. Burial will be at the Tahoma National Cemetery. Memorials in Sandra’s name can be given to the soldier/family support programs provided by the Madigan Foundation, PO Box 97215, Lakewood, WA 98497-0215.
