Obituary of Evelyn Foster Read

Evelyn LaMotte Foster Read Evelyn LaMotte Foster Read died October 26, 2009 at the age of 92. she was born November 15, 1916 I Helena, Montana to Ross and Eva LaMotte. She moved to Olympia in 1940 and married Stanbery Foster in 1941. At the time they were both Assistant Attorneys General for the State of Washington. Stanbery joined the Army JAG Corps in 1941 and served until 1946. Evelyn gave up her trial practice with the Department of Labor & Industries in 1942 and moved to the Office of the Reporter of Decisions. Stanbery opened his private law practice in Olympia upon his return from the Army. Evelyn joined him in 1947. they practiced together as Foster & Foster until Stanbery died in 1970. the firm continues in Olympia as Foster, Foster & Schaller. Evelyn married Vancouver lawyer Dale W. Read in 1979. Dale and Evelyn retired from their respective law practices in the 1980s. Dale died in 1999. Evelyn attended Stadium High School in Tacoma. She received B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Washington. At the UW she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. In high school and college she was a member of the school debate teams. Evelyn was an avid tennis player for over 70 years and was the winner of numerous tennis was an avid tennis player for over 70 years and was the winner of numerous tennis tournaments in Puget Sound area in 1930s, including the Seattle City tournament. Evelyn is survived by her children, Stanbery Foster, Jr. of Clyde Hill (Tere Foster), and Craig LaMotte Foster of Olympia; stepchildren, Dale W. Read, Jr. of Vancouver (Priscila Martins-Read), and Dorothy Zee of Olympia; nephews Stephen A. Foster of Olympia (Sue Foster), Michael Foster of Los Gatos, California, and Harry S. Foster of Edmonds (Kathy Foster); nieces Marian Foster Olson of Bellingham (Charles R. Olson) and Joan Foster Lindskog of Olympia (Vernon L. Lindskog); eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
