Our family had the good fortune to live across the street from Dr. Focht in Olympia. I have so many wonderful memories of her.
Every year she and my father would play April Fool's Day jokes. One year she put a decal of a bullet hole on our window and my father responded the next year by putting a "For Sale" sign on her front lawn. One up-manship was the name of the game! She had a great sense of humor and they enjoyed many laughs.
One day my Mom was feeling very ill and sent me over to Dr. Focht's house. She came and diagnosed my Mom saying, "Carrol, have you been eating too much licorice?" Indeed, my Mom had a potassium depletion and Dr. Focht prescribed bananas to correct the balance. She was amazing.
I had the honor of watering her garden in the summer when she went on vacation with the gals, and one year she brought me back a totem pole figure from Alaska that I still cherish today.
When I went to Europe in 1973, I came down with mono and strep throat and Dr. Focht got me in shape to travel. (I don't remember her charging me.) I was 17 and that day in her office was the last time I saw her.
My family had moved away to Oregon by then, but the memory of her kindness was always part of our family history--the time she found our dog recently hit by a car and how she got it to the vet; the rose growing competitions with my father; and how for the 7 years we were her neighbors we saw generousity, gentility and grace in living color.
A friend from Olympia sent me news of Dr. Focht and I realize now just how much she served as a role model for me. I had no idea about the extensiveness of her education and training, but I think she inspired me as a woman to also claim my intellect and strength when I reached for a PhD.
Dr. Focht survived my father, but when I read her obituary to my mother and sister we spent a long time reflecting on the many qualities that made her unique. Ferne Sabin Focht distinguished herself as a fully human being. Thank you my dear Friend.

We will dearly miss our special friend Ferne. We were fortunate to be her next door neighbors on Windolph Ln for 20 years and got to see the many other talents of Ferne. One memorable occasion was seeing Ferne and June doing "logging". They had cut down a large tree in their backyard which had fallen into the canyon. These two small women cut it up in large blocks (firewood length) and proceeded to use a block and tackle to pull the chunks up the steep bank. By hand no less. How amazing to see two "senior" women doing this! She always had the will and the way! Our sincere sympathy to her family and her devoted niece and caregiver Ava.

This wonderful woman became our family doctor when she first started at Memorial Clinic. She was a no nonsense doctor that told it like it was (at least this was our families experience). She had empathy, compassion and a sense of humor. I know she will be missed by so many people who's life she touched.

At the age of 91, I'm sure most of her friends (unfortunately) are gone. What I remember is that my mother was a patient of hers--for years. I can still remember when mom told me Dr. Focht was retiring -- she was quite beside herself knowing she had to find a new doctor. (And for me to remember that - well)

I met Dr. Focht at the end of her career because I worked at St. Peter's Hospital starting 1979 in ICU and CCU. She was a very caring Doctor and always able to reach her when needed. I never really had an idea about her life but I'm sure it was a rich life and she lived a full one!!!!!
