James Danielson

Obituary of James R. Danielson

James R.Danielson James Russell Danielson, born March 10, 1930, passed away February 15, 2008. Jim, also affectionately know as "Grumps", was born and raised in Spokane, Washington. Jim graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern Washington University. Jim devoted much of his life to the betterment of young people, first as a teacher and later as an executive editor and seller of school text books. Jim enjoyed sailing and he and his wife Jo actually moved to Olympia in order to easily take their boat out on Budd Inlet. While he enjoyed many sailing adventures, one of his great pleasures was to take a "slime run" with members of his family. It was while sailing that Jim often discussed and solved the problems of the world. Jim was known as a quick wit and had a great sense of humor. While sailing, Grumps would enjoy an onion and peanut butter sandwich and a cold bottle of amber ale. Jim was a mentor before most folks began using the term and he had a positive influence on family members, children and grandchildren, and others he came in contact with. Jim was a long time member of United Churches, beginning with his baptism in Spokane. He had many friends among the congregation in Olympia and for years he set up the church before Sunday morning services, often arriving before six o'clock. Jim is survived by his wife, Jo and their two cats; children, Ralene (John), Karen (Gary), and Steve; grandchildren, Sarahann (A.J.), and Daniel (Yokiko). A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at United Churches, 110 11th Avenue SE in Olympia. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that people make a donation to Thurston County Animal Services in the name of Jim Danielson. We will miss you Jim, and may all your trips be smooth sailing.
