Obituary of Velma Cook

Velma May Cook, 86, a forty year resident of Tenino, died Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Easthaven Villa in Yelm, Washington. Velma was born May 5, 1924 in Laurel, Montana to Clarence and Olive (Moon) Nelson. The family lived in the East Olympia area where Velma grew up and went to school. On July 6, 1940 in Olympia, Washington, she married Lawrence W. Cook. He died in 1986. They lived in Oregon for several years before moving to Tenino in the late 1960’s.Velma worked for eighteen years as a sales clerk for Peoples Department Store in Lacey and then for ten years at Symons Frozen Foods in Centralia. She was a member of the Church of the Living Water in Olympia and the Violet Prairie Grange in Tenino. Velma took great joy in sharing time with and watching the development of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing and gardening. She was known for desire to help others. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Houser, Kent, and Lola (Dan) Erhardt of Rochester; two sons, Jerry Cook, Tenino, and Mike (Yvonne) McGuire of Modesto, California; eleven grandchildren, including Dara (Bruce) Clark, Darren Houser, Tina (Jim) Kysar and Greg Erhardt; six great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Her daughter Juanita Vaughan preceded her in death. Memorial donations may be made in her name to Easthaven Villa, 311 Cullens St. NW, Yelm, WA 98597.
