I only met Mary Ann once and talked on the phone with her a couple of times but "it is a small world" we live in. What a gracious lady! You can be so very proud of her. A little story if you will. I grew up in South Bend, WA and began my teaching career in Woodland, WA as a Home Ec teacher. I was required to visit all my students in their homes each year. On one journry I happened upon "Spurrel" road (spelled with one "l"). I wrote my aunt in Seattle to see if she knew of any Spurrell's in that area. (This was in 1970). She conferred with her aunts and they remember a horse drawn wagon ride and boat trip to Portland and then back up through Vancouver. While traveling they stopped in the area surrounding Woodland or on and met up with cousins (third removed most probably). There was the connection to Spurrel road!
In about 1946-47 my sister JeanieRae had to visit Neil Bailey, the superintendent of schools at the time to see if she could start school early. She read for him and answered a few questions and off she went to school. Not soon after my mother Edna Jean Kelley Spurrell helped out at Margaurite Bailey's beauty salon by doing shampoos, never knowing apparently what Marguarite's maiden name was--Spurrell. It was not until Mrs. Bailey's death and subsequent obit in the South Bend papers that I realized there might be a connection. I also ponered the nsame Brunsickle as I remembered a person of that name in the Legislative. Hmmm? I summoned my courage and contacted Mary Ann. She was so gracious and I believe I sent her some materials so she would know I was not some weird person trying to bamboozle her! She came to one of the Spurrell family picnics at Rainbow Falls. I was so delighted to she her. She in turn told me about her connection to the "other" Spurrells.
She came from a family of do-ers and givers. May her legency continue on with all her children and grandchildren. May God bless you as she continues her life of love in the Lord's mansion. I am sure she has her wings by now. When you feel a soft breeze on your checks or mussing your hair, now it is her walking beside you.
Most Sincerely,
Joani Kelley Spurrell Rise

To the family of Mary Ann,
I was sorry to read about Mary Ann's death. Her father and mine were cousins and we went to school together in South Bend.
My favorite memory of her was when she used to bring the cutest baby doll to school when we were in grade school at Broadway and she would let me hold it. I never had such a beautiful doll like that and it meant so much to me.
Mary Ann always had nice clothes and her mother saved all her little things. When our friend brought her little sisters to their house and they were so scruffy she took out some of theose nice clothes and gave them to the girls. I know it was hard for her to part with them after saving them for so long.
The last time I talked to MaryAnn was when she was taking her mother to the Pioneer Picnic and they thought it was at Bruce Port Park but it was in Bay Center and it just happened that our church was having our annual picnic at Bruce Port Park and we had such a good time reminiscing with them that they almost didn't leave for Bay Center.
I am happy that Mary Ann had such a fulfilling life. As a child you could tell she had the confidence to do that. Please accept our deepest sympathy. God Bless You all! Gloria and Edwin Jouper

Bill and family:
Although our friendship began only a few years ago, Mary Ann had a unique way of making you feel like you had been her best friend forever. It was an honor to be her friend. She battled cancer fiercely with dignity and grace. She was a very special lady and will be missed so very much.
